Charting New Territory, Every Day: My Technology Career with Accenture

We live in a rapidly changing world where technology is pervasive. Working in technology puts me at the forefront of this evolution, and there’s seldom a boring day, because I’m always on the lookout for the next big thing.

I lead the regional technology consulting campaign to help transition our clients to a new international financial-reporting standard called IFRS15. This is a new space, and it’s exciting to engage with clients and be part of their transition. This kind of leading-edge project is typical at Accenture. Our environment is highly dynamic, and innovative thinking and creativity are vital skills for success.

As I’ve grown in my career, I’ve challenged team members and colleagues to disrupt the status quo. Company leaders emphasize the importance of leading and developing the next Accenture generation, and I make it a priority to be completely connected to my multinational team. When we first started working together, we all had a lot to get used to in terms of different working styles, time zones and even local language dialects. I’ve found that regular calls and updates are important, but so are in-person visits to meet with offshore team members. It’s always easier when you can put a face to a name.

The payoff for multinational collaboration is the network of contacts you have at your disposal, both on your team and across the company. When I’m faced with a new or challenging situation and request help, there’s always someone ready to share knowledge, offer advice or link me to someone willing and able to provide guidance. This gives me the confidence to navigate uncharted territories and model continuous innovation for my team.

Another payoff is the day-to-day satisfaction of seeing my teams’ telco billing and customer-service projects in the real world. Whenever I visit the mobile or broadband customer-service centers in Singapore, I see the staff using applications that my teams developed. And every month, I feel a sense of pride when I get my own personal phone bill, because I know it’s the result of more than three years of hard work!
