Not many people in the business world can say that saving lives is part of their job.
But thanks to a recent Accenture Development Partnerships project, I can. And FORTUNE recognizes this world-changing work, too.
My team collaborated with Amref Health Africa to create a sustainable mobile solution that is improving community health—and potentially saving lives—in African communities.
It’s the most impactful work I’ve done, and the proudest I’ve been in my 16 years with Accenture. It’s just one example of the way we’re transforming the way the world works and lives with the work we do every day.
Our sustainable mobile solution
I spent just over a year in Nairobi, Kenya, working with Amref.
I wanted to work on an Accenture Development Partnerships project since I first started working at Accenture and learned about the impact the program was making on the world. This was the perfect opportunity for me.
The goal of the project was to use mobile technology to help fight the spread of disease and improve community health in sub-Saharan Africa. Our objective was to develop a mobile health learning platform to help train community health care workers, who in turn would educate the local community on health education, disease prevention and nutrition.
We were the technology and learning-management solutions arm of the project. I served as the overall delivery lead, responsible for coordinating across the various delivery and donor organizations. Amref was responsible for the actual training, with a goal of training 3,000 community health workers—which gave us the potential to reach more than 300,000 members of the community.
LEAP, the mHealth platform, is a sustainable solution that enables community health workers to work at their own pace with their mobile devices in the community. It links the health workers to each other using group-chat services, as well as to their supervisors for support and ongoing reporting.
Our life-saving impact
The actual impact we had on the local communities was to help improve overall health, with the potential to save lives. There were numerous examples where our solution reached individuals that previously didn’t have access to what we would consider basic health care information.
The Leap platform helped community health workers mobilize locally to support various health campaigns and provide life-changing (and potentially life-saving) education on topics like maternal nutrition and the importance of vaccinations.
Through my experience, I learned the importance of making the human connection by truly listening to our end customers and seeing the value that we can provide. It also helped me focus more on the big picture and less on the little things that could go wrong.
Getting out of my comfort zone
For my “regular” job, I am the delivery lead for an Accenture Life Insurance Platform, successfully implementing immediate and deferred annuity products for this solution. I manage a large onshore and offshore team, collaborating with my client to ensure they get the most possible value from our platform.
My leaders and my team supported my decision to work on a project with Accenture Development Partnerships. And while it requires a balance of different priorities that includes work, time and even salary—I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Accenture encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, helping me make lifelong connections, grow as a person and even make a difference in society along the way.
If you want to do work like this, here’s my advice. Research, learn, broaden your network. Get out of your comfort zone and do it!
Innovate and do work that’s truly transforming the world, every day. Find your fit with the Accenture team.
