“Unprecedented times” and “social distancing” are two phrases that defined 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to quickly adjust to a new normal that’s been anything but.
One positive result: This time of crisis inspired people to come together and support each other in beautiful and bountiful ways.
Because at the heart of every great change, is a great human.
Here are five ways our people are harnessing the power of change to make the world a better place to live and work.
1. Cleaning up the ocean
Ocean plastic pollution is a global challenge with significant economic, social and environmental implications. Sustainability Consultant Daniel Newton is pursuing his passion for sustainability and helping clean up the ocean.
Change for good: In collaboration with Accenture Development Partnerships, Daniel helped develop a new Plastics Policy Playbook that lays out a plan to improve waste collection and help end the ocean plastic pollution problem.
2. Creating a sustainable future
It’s up to all of us to do our part to protect the planet. Caroline Larose is a manager in our Sustainability & Responsible Business Strategy Practice, helping clients build roadmaps that tie environmental strategies to concrete actions.
Change for good: Caroline and team have helped take our commitment to climate action to the next level with three industry-leading goals and plans to accomplish them by 2025:
- Achieve net-zero emissions.
- Move to zero waste.
- Plan for water risk.
3. Fast-tracking social innovation
Our people asked for ways to use their skills for the good of their communities. Our Social Innovators Accelerator program upskills our people with key social innovation skills, links them around the world to share best practices and offers funding they might need to co-create with clients and partners.
Change for good: A Social Innovators team in Spain created a new voice-assistance channel using Amazon’s smart speaker and Alexa app to provide information on how to avoid coronavirus contagion, help neighbors, better manage stress or contact the Red Cross.
4. Fighting childhood cancer
Just before he lost his sweet three-year-old daughter, Melissa, to leukemia, our Joe Depa promised her he’d never stop fighting for her. Joe is committed to carrying on her legacy and to helping find a cure for childhood cancer, personally and professionally.
Change for good: Working with our Applied Intelligence team, Joe championed a new data and analytics approach that is one big step toward better understanding and treating childhood cancer.
5. Rebuilding in a time of crisis
Our people are helping our clients, partners and communities around the world respond, recover and rebuild after the challenges brought on by COVID-19.
Change for good: From helping ensure access to a steady flow of ventilators to hospitals in Brazil to helping laid off or furloughed people get back to work, we’re helping people come together to address important societal issues.
