Your cover letter tells your story

The biggest challenge on a two-page resume is explaining your past work experience crisply and concisely. In fact, many companies use AI-based programs and algorithms to parse out the basic details of your resume.

That’s why a well-written cover letter is more important than ever. Not only does it bring your personal side front and center—something technology can’t replace—it strengthens your unique selling proposition.  

And more importantly, your cover letter becomes your story. It's a tool used by a recruiter or the person referring you to share your authentic story to the hiring manager.

Tips for an impactful cover letter:

  1. Show the real you. The key to a good cover letter is to stay true to who you are. Include engagements that make you want to work late, conversations that get you jumping out of your chair, presentations that allow you to innovate and collaborate. Feature all the areas of interest that bring out the best in you.
  2. Highlight your work and leadership style. State your strengths and give the reader an authentic view of how you will perform as a member of their team. Company culture is a two-way street.
  3. Focus on the future. Most people are naturally drawn to expressing their past success stories—which is similar to driving a car forward by looking in the rearview mirror. Instead, look ahead. Describe what you want to build, how you want to build it and what sort of team will get you there.
