Benefits of Lean/Kanban in Manufacturing
By: Mike Hortiatis

Your company is competing in the global marketplace for customers who are able to research and compare your products against competitors’ on the Internet. Global trade has grown over 200% in the last 15 years. Domestic companies are now able to operate globally with extended supply chains, which further challenges companies to deliver value to their customers. You need to provide customers what they want, when they want it, and at a price they are willing to pay.

Representative companies from the top 10 lean manufacturing companies identified in 2014 by Manufacturing Global achieved significant improvements using lean principles. For example, a chip manufacturer reduced its lead time from 14 weeks to 10 days to introduce a new chip into its factory. The US manufacturer had modeled its production system after Toyota’s production system.

Manufacturing operations are complex, especially within extended supply chains, and hidden costs and inefficiencies (otherwise known as waste) are difficult to identify and eliminate.

Successful companies employ best-in-class practices—lean manufacturing principles—that are applied to optimize processes, such as product design and quality, materials management, and production line layout, and also provide methodologies for continuous improvement to achieve efficiencies and customer service levels that allow companies to successfully compete in today’s marketplace.

How often do you analyze your production operations to identify waste? Are your company’s inventories too high? Are your employees engaged? Does your company have a systematic approach to eliminating waste? Are you interested in implementing lean manufacturing to improve your return on investment (ROI) and return on capital (ROC) and to manage an engaged workforce? The Accenture Academy course Applying Lean and Kanban Methodologies in Manufacturing will provide you with the knowledge to effectively design your production layouts, reduce work in process (WIP) inventory, and eliminate waste to optimize your manufacturing efficiencies, which ultimately translates to higher profits.
