5 Tips to Building a Successful Career in Technology

Technology—it’s ever-evolving, and it’s transforming the world. To keep innovation moving forward in the digital age, it’s vital to support the next generation of technology leaders.

Recently, the Accenture Interactive office in New York City welcomed a group of students from the New York on Tech (NYOT) program, which has a mission to prepare the city’s next generation of tech leaders by creating pathways for them to thrive in technology and innovation. During this career day, Accenture leaders offered inspirational advice and shared their own stories of career success, and students got a peek at the future with the latest innovations, from artificial intelligence (AI) to robotics and more.

By partnering with community organizations like NYOT, the people of Accenture are paving a path for the future, giving students and recent graduates access to the latest in technology and the chance to dream up their own future in tech.

Consulting Management Analyst Kevin Gomez offers five tips to think about as you consider a path to a successful career in technology:

  1. Explore your world. Don’t limit yourself to what you learn in a classroom. Information is out there, waiting to be taken advantage of. It’s what you do in your free time that counts.

  2. All experiences count. No experience or project is a waste of time. The lessons you learn and the obstacles you face will help you make smart and forward-thinking decisions in the future.

  3. Challenge yourself. The best way to stay current and ahead of the curve in technology is to look for projects that challenge your current skills and require you to learn new skills to succeed. Your background or what you’ve studied will not determine your future. How often you are challenging your knowledge and advancing your skills will.

  4. Lean into discomfort. Because that’s where you’ll really grow and learn about yourself.

  5. Build and nurture relationships. In the corporate world, working hard is a given, but it’s the relationships you nurture and build that can set you apart.
