5 Surprising Skills You Need for a Digital Career

Looking to grow your career in digital? It’s not just your technical skills that need to be up to par. Just as important, you’ll need to bring your innovative and collaborative mindset.

In short, we need the doers, but we also want the dreamers.

As a recruiter for Fjord and Accenture Digital, I’m often asked about the qualities we look for when considering candidates for digital opportunities.

A typical day might include using machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), big data and analytics, cloud, mobility, robotics and the industrial internet of things (IIoT) to create the best customer experiences and to develop first-to-market digital products and solutions for the world’s biggest companies. So, while you’ll surely need technical acumen, you’ll also need to think differently.

Here are five skills we look for:

  • Passion for the work. It’s vital to have passion for how and why the work is done. Excitement in someone’s voice when talking about their work is my first signal that they might be a good fit for the role.

  • Interest in innovation. We believe that every product or solution we produce should be the best—and possibly even the first of its kind. It’s crucial to stay up-to-date on emerging technologies, and always be on the lookout for better ways to do things.

  • Human-centric approach. People are at the heart of everything we design. Be prepared to develop solutions that are simple, intuitive and beautiful, but most of all, good for people.

  • Collaborative style. We take a very collaborative, team-based approach to every project, as diverse perspectives lead to better results. And it’s more fun!

  • Design-led strategy. Design is at the center of everything we do; there’s a reason for everything. It’s important that you can explain your processes and decision-making throughout your work on a project.

Accenture Digital is an amazing place to work, with an inclusive, collaborative culture that allows us to truly make an impact through the work we do every day.

These skill should be percolated down from top. Accenture should aim to skill people from the top...why, most of the times leadership team pushes ideas from the top, they should be role model in re-skilling themselves first then teams will follow. There should be survey conducted how many of MDs have re-skilled for new age technologies country-wise....that will show are we only talkers or we walk the talk.

Absolutely agree, however, this is not something very new, we are packing these skills/needs under digital. But in general if one needs to be successful today, all of these are needed. However, mixing the right people together is the key. We should not compromise on quality and have a framework to actually harness creativity and innovation, this is not easy and sometime innovation becomes a tick in the box.
