You become a Spartan when you run the Spartan Race, a series of challenging obstacle races, and I have been one since 2016. Having gained some weight, I was on the lookout for an adrenaline-pumping sport. I discovered the Spartan Race, which changed me—fitness became no longer a destination, but a journey.
The idea for the Accenture Spartans came to life during one dinner at my place last Christmas 2017. The energetic and enthusiastic folks around me wanted to participate in the next race and represent Accenture as a team. I took the lead in helping the team be physically and mentally ready. We met every Sunday to train, performing cardio and CrossFit exercises. As twenty-, thirty- and forty-somethings rising to the challenge, we had our moments of truth—and discovered more about our inner selves.
My mantra was simple: It’s all in the mind. That’s what I remind and try to inculcate within the team to pull us through the tough moments. We ran races in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. The team grew. We became a motley crew of people coming from different business groups, communities and nationalities. We forged strong bonds and became new friends.
For us, it wasn’t about coming in first or second in races. It was about adopting a Spartan lifestyle, one that promoted fitness and health. The Spartan way teaches lessons of not giving up and persevering to overcome obstacles.
The Accenture Spartan’s motto is Truly Human: To be fitness ambassadors within the Accenture community and encourage people to join. As one who led the team, this endeavor was priceless. It enabled me to contribute a little bit to changing the lives of Accenture’s exceptional, high performance individuals.
