Making technologies that work

Inventions arise from necessity, but it takes curiosity and drive for making a difference to see them through. At Accenture, we focus on our client’s most important needs to uncover ways to make technology work to their greatest advantage.

Take for example our work with one of our clients in the paper industry. Constantly, they face the immense challenge of intensifying plantation productivity within limited land resources. This comes at a time of an expanding global population, creating surges in paper consumption while increasing pressure on finite resources. We needed to help them find a solution for maximizing land use.

At the data science center of excellence, we started off by assessing our client’s use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Leveraging this, we brainstormed what artificial intelligence (AI) could bring to the table. This gave birth to the creation of an asset that uses computer vision and deep learning to process drone-based images. The innovation opened the door to nearly 100 percent visibility into the plantation, enabling real-time identification of areas for interventions.

Consequently, we were able to win not only a partnership with our client, but also a patent for this invention. More importantly, our innovation for using image processing for inventory, growth and risk prediction now sees wider application, paving the way for more transformation in various industries.
