The world of tech is vast and full of opportunity – and for the women in tech at Accenture, there’s no better place to be.

We are actively on the lookout for great humans to join us, and recognise the value women can bring to the tech industry. Women have been key to shaping the way we use technology and are constantly at the forefront of innovation, and have more than proven themselves in their calling to better lives through what they do.

With International Women’s Day just around the corner, we put the spotlight on four women across Southeast Asia, as they share with us a slice of their lives, and dispense invaluable advice based off their experiences as women in tech.

What I do:

I’m an SAP consultant based in Bangkok, Thailand. I design, analyse and provide SAP solutions for my clients based on my understanding of their business requirements, and to meet their objectives. In my current project, I develop programmes and tools to help my client perform data migration from a legacy system to an SAP system.

Best part of my work:

The best part of my work is that I get to always be at the forefront of learning and working with new technology. Every day at work, there is always something new to learn about emerging technologies. These factors have shaped and influenced me to be a knowledge seeker, and to never stop learning. Apart from gaining new experiences and learning, I love that my colleagues all share the same vision as me and are very supportive too – which inspires me a lot in the work I do.

My advice:

Allow yourself to keep an open mind to new things and accept challenges as they come. Know that being a woman working in technology can be a very exciting and enjoyable endeavour. As long as you are willing to learn, everyone here is always willing to give you an equal opportunity to chart your own career path.

What I do:

I'm an Application Development Manager from Jakarta, Indonesia, and I am experienced in SAP HCM. I like to think that I’m a designer and a problem-solver. I listen to my clients’ problems to find out what we need to solve, get an understanding of their goals for the business, and any concerns they may have about their employees. Gathering these insights, I leverage on my experiences and technical expertise to seek out the right solutions for my clients. As part of my efforts in managing good client relationships, I also often conduct value-added experience-sharing sessions with my clients on business processes and the latest technologies.

Best part of my work:

Working in technology and being a woman in technology! This is something that I’m really proud of, and my family thinks what I do is cool too. What I love about my job is that I get to sharpen my skills and knowledge in tech because Accenture is always up to date with the latest trends. My work gives me the opportunity to help my clients become more technologically savvy and knowledgeable as well, and I get to be the first to inform them of the latest technology trends that are relevant to their businesses.

My advice:

Be proud and confident with whatever you choose to do. I get to stand out and be different in my job, and that is a sense of pride for me. It can sometimes be challenging to keep up to date with everything that’s changing so fast. It is the nature of technology. But it is also the one that keeps you growing. So whenever you feel it’s too much, take a step back, and prioritise which technology to keep following and which ones are not as vital at the moment. It will help give you the space to work on yourself and what’s important.

What I do:

In my Technology roles for Accenture Singapore and Australia, I’ve had opportunities to work with many different types of technologies, industries, and an array of talented people. I have been involved in the performing arts since I was young, and my current role at Accenture reminds me of being a stage manager behind a theatre production. Just as a stage manager ensures that all the elements are in place for a good show, I leverage on the latest innovation and technologies to plan, execute, and deliver projects and programmes to meet my stakeholders’ vision. I manage our people and help to connect them to the Accenture Ecosystem so we can collectively bring a common vision to fruition for Accenture and our clients.

Best part of my work:

I am constantly amazed by how our people turn ideas into reality, and this is definitely one of the best parts of my work! Accenture is a place to learn and grow. The spirit of collaboration is strong and everyone is very passionate about what they do, so there are a lot of opportunities where I can learn from others, and in turn share what I know with them.

My advice:

Set your own boundaries. Know that you are in control of the choices you make; it’s how you navigate around and react to what is in front of you that matters. Give yourself the space and time to do what you need to do, and be mindful of what you want.

Also, help others constructively. They may not have the knowledge, awareness or wherewithal to know better. We only know what we know, and we are learning every day too. What I know at 48 and what my friend knows at 48 will be different. So, be open to learning at any age in any stage of your career, and be willing to share what you know with others around you too.

What I do:

I am the Program Lead for a large-scale, complex project implementation in Malaysia, and the Technology Lead for two global clients too. I am responsible for providing leadership and guidance on projects – from assembling a strong and talented team with deep industry, functional, and technical expertise, to planning, executing, and delivering projects based on clients’ requirements. My role as part of the leadership team also includes strengthening the capabilities and leadership abilities of the technology work we do in Malaysia.

Apart from that, I am also leading the community of technology analysts in Malaysia, where we aim to create a consistent and meaningful experience for our tech analysts across Southeast Asia. I am responsible for their career growth, capabilities development, performance and hiring. I am very passionate in steering and accelerating the learning journey for our next generation of talents!

Best part of my work:

I enjoy working as a team and building others up just as they build me up. I’ve learnt to understand my colleagues’ struggles because in most cases, I can resonate with those situations well and be able to share my own experiences about how I overcame those challenges in life and work as I’ve been through the same circumstances as them.

I pride myself in building successful teams by blending individuals with the right experience, potential, and personality in the right roles, in the right shaped pyramid, and at the right price for each particular phase of an engagement. And in every engagement I lead, I carry not only the baton in the relay – I carry my entire team. That makes my career journey enriching and fulfilling.

My advice:

Don’t underestimate your potential. You are valuable.

In my career, I’ve learned to focus my energy on what I know I do well instead of trying to fix my limitation or weaknesses, as I believe when I put my 100% focus and effort in areas I naturally do best, I feel valuable. I see that I can progress faster and accomplish more when I give myself permission to do what I do well. I want others to feel that they do have the right support to help them succeed in their career.

Stewardship is about succeeding by helping others succeed. I always share this quote with my team, especially to women at work: “No role is too small or too big”. It’s what you make of it. Don’t seek promotion, seek responsibility.
