The Artificial Intelligence tipping point

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly coming of age, as business leaders increasingly grasp the immense potential of “smart” machines and other innovations as catalysts for greater efficiency and competitiveness.

The dollars tell a compelling story. By 2019, the global market for content analytics, discovery and cognitive systems software is projected to reach $9.2 billion, according to IDC, more than double that of 2014.*

We see tremendous opportunities ahead for our clients. However, potential rewards will only become reality through substantial research and development, and we’ve got a lot of work ahead. Read on for more on our action plan.

Artificial Intelligence, Put to Work

Artificial Intelligence, as we see it, is a collection of multiple technologies that enable machines to sense, comprehend and act—and learn, either on their own or to augment human activities. 

So how does it work in the real world? A few examples of how cognitive is taking shape in various industries include:

  • Intelligent Insurance Claims Processing
    We’ve incorporated machine learning into traditional claims dashboards designed to model the expertise of individual agents, freeing them up to spend time on the subset of claims where human expertise is needed.
  • Fraud Detection
    We’re infusing intelligent systems to spot anomalies in large data sets, empowering human agents to investigate.
  • Drug Testing
    We already have prototype systems for law enforcement agencies that optimize limited resources and identify higher-risk cases.
  • Dynamic Process Compliance
    Rather than focusing on predefined criteria, we’re using cognitive systems that learn what makes for effective performance and identify deviations from these learned models.
  • Pharmacovigilance
    We help leading pharmaceutical companies use natural language processing, machine learning and rules to automate drug safety analysis.
  • Cognitive Robotics
    Machines going beyond simple, mechanical automation to new levels of judgment-based automation, enabling new levels of productivity and accuracy.
  • Virtual Agents
    The agents can automate dialogue with users in natural languages and understand and resolve complex user queries by applying “Deep Learning,” such as the ability to automate judgment on images.

Artificial Intelligence R&D Agenda

To stay ahead of this rapidly-evolving field, we’re investing real money in real people with the intellect, skills and creative thinking to generate the results our clients have come to expect.

That’s why we are accelerating our R&D agenda in Artificial Intelligence at the Accenture Lab located in the Accenture Centre for Innovation in Dublin, where knowledge, innovation and insights are cultivated and shared throughout the Accenture global network.

Our R&D agenda is aggressive across three key areas: pilot projects to balance automation with augmentation, tackle select industry challenges and develop new business concept prototypes. 

Additionally, we’ve awarded our first artificial intelligence research grant to the Insight Centre for Data Analytics at University College Dublin and expanded our partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from data science into artificial intelligence research.
