Senior Java Backend Dev Lead
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Development Lead to join our large-scale digital transformation programme in the banking sector. This pivotal leadership role is responsible for shaping backend architecture, driving engineering excellence, and ensuring the successful delivery of secure, scalable, and high-performing microservices that power modern digital banking channels.
You'll lead a distributed team of backend engineers and collaborate with architects, product managers, frontend leads, and DevOps teams. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that combines strategic oversight with the opportunity to contribute directly to the codebase when needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and mentor a team of backend developers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
Own the backend development workstream, ensuring high-quality and timely delivery within a large-scale digital transformation programme
Design and implement scalable microservices using Java and Spring Boot, aligned with domain-driven design and modern architecture principles
Guide teams in developing secure, maintainable, and reusable APIs and backend services
Collaborate with architects, frontend leads, and stakeholders to align backend solutions with overall platform strategy
Champion Agile practices across distributed teams, facilitating ceremonies such as backlog refinement, sprint planning, and retrospectives
Ensure seamless integration with cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and CI/CD pipelines
Work closely with frontend developers to support effective Backend for Frontend (BFF) integration patterns
Lead efforts to enhance developer experience through tooling, documentation, and workflow improvements
What You Need:
Strong experience of backend development experience
Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot
Proven experience designing and building microservices in complex enterprise environments
Strong understanding of RESTful APIs and modern backend integration patterns
Demonstrated experience working in Agile environments
Prior experience leading and collaborating with distributed teams
Excellent problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills
Bonus If You Have:
Experience with Backend for Frontend (BFF) architecture
Familiarity with AWS services (e.g., ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, S3)
Background in banking or other highly regulated, mission-critical domains
