Accenture has partnered with the California Life Sciences Association (CLSA) to produce the 2019 Digital Health Trends Report. This is the first comprehensive study of digital health at life sciences companies in California exploring the challenges and opportunities that come with providing more digital health solutions. We surveyed 184 people and conducted 25 interviews from a range of positions in biotech, medical device and technology companies with revenues of more than $10 million. The highlights of the research findings were presented along with a panel session of leading clients and industry partners at the September 17 launch event at the San Francisco Innovation Hub.

Two main findings in the research stand out: The digital health opportunity in California is real with California’s leading-edge university programs, and Silicon Valley-based innovation as the top-two factors supporting its leadership in digital health. But the primary issue standing in the way is a lack of digital health talent. With only a small pool of trained digital health professionals graduating from university programs, demand for skills far exceeds supply in the marketplace. In California, this is further exacerbated by the entry of big technology companies into this space, who have the deep pockets and cultural cache needed to recruit rapidly, en masse, and pay at the high-end of the market place.

So, the two biggest advantages for realizing the digital health opportunity in California are also the two biggest challenges to overcome—or redefine. Today’s leaders are seizing the opportunity to create infinite new possibilities as they combine the best science with new technology to reinvent the patient experience and redefine the future of healthcare.
