At the moment I am working on a project for a global investment bank in London and I am involved in the implementation of an automated process that will monitor and control all pricing within the investment bank. Within this project, I am responsible for the data integration of a number of risk management systems in a central Management Information System. Here I can use my knowledge in Risk Management to identify the required data and I can combine this with the knowledge of the techniques and processes that I have gained during previous projects. In addition, it is definitely important that you are able to coordinate well and that you can make arrangements with the various stakeholders. The team consists of one manager, one consultant and two junior consultants. Together we coordinate all project activities, we provide the specifications for all systems and perform all user tests for the customer.
Besides working with the customer, I am also an active team member for the University of Twente. With a small group of consultants, we help the recruitment department by increasing Accenture’s awareness among the students by helping organize events at the university.
At 8:40 am on Monday, I step on the plane from Amsterdam to London City. From there l take the subway and I'm usually in the office before 10:00 am. The week starts with introductory meeting where we go through everything concerning the project with the team. My tasks and responsibilities usually consist of an analysis of sub-domains and data streams from different systems, designing and writing specifications in alignment with the client’s needs, and the preparation and execution of test cases. In addition, I am also involved in project management tasks such as preparing meetings, tracking action lists and creating schedules.
If we have enough time we will get together at one o'clock or 12 o'clock and have lunch at one of the many street markets such as Spitalfields Field and Whitecross.
If I am in London in the weekends, I like to eat and drink with colleagues. This is an excellent way to meet new people and to get to know the city a little better. If I have a night to myself, I like watching the latest series like Californication and Suits or I will go for a run through the city. In the Netherlands I try to spend as much time as possible with my friends in the weekends. Usually we go into the city or we eat together. I am usually in Friesland in the summer. My biggest hobby is motorcycling. In the last two years, I have driven to the Swiss Alps and to the mountains in northern Italy. Who knows, I might soon be planning a trip through England soon.
Know what you want. At Accenture, you can do anything as long as you have the right ambition and motivation. Accenture offers the opportunity to gain a lot of experience in a short period of time. No starter knows what he is about 2 years, let alone doing 5 years, but if you want to continue, it is important to find out where you want to be in a few years and what your next step will be to achieve this. In my opinion, this fits well with the aforementioned motto 'Success is a choice. " If you know what your next step is, you can work towards it, and realize your ambitions. Ultimately, your success is determined by your performance, but if you really want something, you can certainly achieve it within a global organization like Accenture.
Even if you are not completely sure what you want to do in the future, a career at Accenture is a great start to your career. As a (junior) consultant you will work in many different organizations and have different roles within these organizations. This allows you to get an idea of how the different industries work and which activities suit you. You can develop your own specialty focused within an industry or field that appeals to you most.
