Job description 

During your thesis/internship you will investigate a scientific or business relevant topic in the field of Industrial IoT or Smart Grid, such as:

  • Energy Cloud: The ‘energy cloud’ represents a wide range of strategic, operational, technological, commercial, environmental, and regulatory changes that are transforming the traditional one-way utility model for energy provision. Cloud technology is of great relevance for the electricity sector and associated energy carriers (e.g. batteries, dammed water). Cloud issues and Blockchain technology are addressed in many IT research programs and projects, but not with respect to Smart Grid questions. 
  • Distributed self-organization vs. central control: What are the metrics for stability in the future (maybe not frequency and voltage)? How can mostly self-organized systems be stabilized? What central actors will be needed? Which part of the system should be fully self-organized, where is central control needed?
  • Observability and control at distribution level: With more demanding applications, it will always be necessary to get more data from the field. The grid operator needs a way of estimating / visualizing the state of a Grid whose structure is changing and also beyond 2020. 

o Sub-topics

    • Advanced integrated communication and control systems for gathering a wide set of information from the field and communicating with local and remote devices to enable rapid analysis and initiation of automatic corrective actions;
    • Increased observability of the electric system for grid management and control;
    • Advanced sensors on grid equipment: to identify anomalies and communicate with nearby devices when a fault or another issue occurs; Sensors have to detect patterns as precursors to faults. 
    • Observability of the LV and MV distribution grids in a cost effective way (e.g. number of sensors, coupling with AMM data management)
    • LV and MV Advanced monitoring and operational planning
  • Self-healing networks: More R&D is needed to address the self-healing functionality and avoiding default on the grid for future complex scenarios.

o Sub-topics: 

    • Options for self-healing grids i.e. the ability of a power system to automatically prevent, detect, counteract and repair itself
    • Autonomous self-controlling and healing grids (dynamic topology, power re-routing)

Accenture requires candidates to shape their own research questions based on above topics, which meet both academic requirements and Accenture’s interests. 

Accenture will help you by providing supervision by a subject matter expert and the opportunity of being in contact with our clients for conducting interviews and collecting data.

This internship will take place within Infrastructure Consulting at Accenture Netherlands.

Are you the perfect candidate?

  • You are in the final stage of your Master study (i.e. completed all mandatory and optional courses) in the area of IT, business, or Electrical Power Engineering related subjects; 
  • You have an overall average grade of at least 7,5;
  • You are interested in IT, telecommunications or networking; 
  • You are a team player with excellent communication skills; 
  • You are fluent in both Dutch and English; 
  • You can work independently and have a proactive attitude.
