We believe that actions can change the world, one beautiful idea at a time. So, let there be change!

Here at Accenture, we are constantly working on ways to improve people's way of living and society as a whole. With a focus on inclusivity, circularity and travel, we aim to change the world and contribute to a better, more sustainable future through our innovative ideas and deep knowledge of technology.

In our quest to do so, the Making a Difference Battle came to be. Our yearly event sees various NGOs and teams of our employees with aspirations of bettering the world teaming up and ‘battling’ to bring out the most innovative solutions to real-world problems: to literally make a difference.

This year, the battle took place once more, online. The theme centered around the SDGs (sustainable development goals). Seven groups registered and the rest was history. The teams pitched their ideas to a panel of judges. Solutions for reducing hunger and inequalities, facilitating decent work and economic growth, among many other goals, were heard. So, what were these teams all about?

Plan International (2020 winner!)

A partner for 15 years now, Plan International advocates for children’s rights and equality for girls. This year, Emma Ouwerkerk and her team worked on innovative digital solutions to help Plan International locate new opportunities through the collection, storage and exchange of data in a centralized database. This way, they sought to improve knowledge- sharing mechanisms and enable a higher quality for the NGO’s programs and fundraising.

Missing Maps

Missing Maps employs the strength of our global network and organizes 'Mapathons' around Accenture offices in the Netherlands, gathering volunteers to offer access to mapping for developing countries. This year, Lala Kaoutar Ashour and her team had the goal to provide Peruvian women with better access to healthcare by mapping regions of Peru. Our NL team came in third best mapper world-wide after Spain and the Philippines!

Black Jaguar Foundation

The Black Jaguar Foundation’s focal point is conserving the Amazon forest and Cerrado Savana in Brazil, and of course, preventing our own endangerment. Their aim is the re-forestation of the land in Brazil through planting of one million trees by 2020, ultimately reaching 2 billion trees. Vera van Gelder and her team were devoted to finding effective ways to plant trees through two innovative solutions: 1) implementing a new and efficient financial software solution, and 2) building a roadmap to locate fundraising partners and better map stakeholders.

ProVeg

ProVeg is an NGO that promotes a plant-based diet for personal health and environmental reasons. Yu-Chia Huang and her team, invested in the fight against climate change, aimed to help the NGO scale up and innovate their app by facilitating people’s reduction of meat consumption, while also giving them information about the impact of their food choices. The partnership between the NGO and our team also aimed to highlight the benefits that come about from a vegan diet, as well as broaden the scope of ProVeg in terms of business partnership and institutional impact.

Refugee Talent Hub

The Refugee Talent Hub's goal is to empower refugees to join the Dutch labor market and bring their talent to light, by setting up personal get-togethers between refugees and possible employers. It proved to be challenging for employers to keep up with the people they interviewed and who they wanted to invite for a follow-up, so Syan Sitalsing and her team attempted to tackle this problem precisely, by designing an app. This app’s purpose is to improve the process and make it easier for employeers to keep track of the interviewees and follow-ups, as well as collect data for management purposes. Importantly, it also enhances job opportunities for refugees!

Cyberpoli

Cyberpoli offers a platform that allows chronically ill and disabled children to ask questions to healthcare professionals anonymously, as well as connect with other children, in an online and interactive manner. Our team, led by Leonie Dorrestein and Glona Arts, aimed to make the platform more efficient by improving the website, and so, the retention of its visitors. This would be done by creating personas, building prototypes, and ensuring the users validate them.

100 Weeks

100 Weeks is an NGO helping women living in extreme poverty and difficult conditions by donating to them directly, with the goal of the money donated being spent in a conscious and efficient way. Melissa op de Weegh, Rinco Buist and their team aimed to connect and engage as many people as possible in the Netherlands to these women. This was done through a platform that offers personalized use and enhanced communication for donors–in this manner facilitating donations.

Our impact

The Making a Difference Battle forms a great part of the many ways in which we try to achieve our goals for a more responsible and sustainable future - to make an impact that can be felt and seen throughout the world.

At the same time, the battle offers the opportunity for us to become increasingly socially and environmentally aware. It facilitates the involvement of our employees in projects that offer innovative solutions and gives them the chance to do good. Every small change has an impact!
