HELPING TO MAKE CHILDREN ‘VISIBLE’

Birth Registration is a fundamental right of every child, yet over 230 million children under the age of five have never been recorded—in the eyes of the law, these children are invisible.

Accenture Development Partnerships, a strategic partner to Plan International for many years, has most recently supported the publication of the “Innovations in Birth Registration” report. This comprehensive guide showcases good practice and provides practical insights to support government, private sector and civil society organizations looking to improve birth registration rates and strengthen civil registration and vital statistics systems.

The report highlights:

  • The necessity for cross-sector collaboration

  • The need to take a user-centred approach to solution design

  • The opportunities afforded by digital technology such as mobile, cloud and analytics—capitalizing on the increased capabilities, availabilities and affordability.

Given the scale of the challenge, this is a much-needed accelerator to help account for every child.

A GLOBAL INNOVATION PARTNERSHIP TO HELP TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF GIRLS

Accenture and Plan International have been working together for over 15 years to further girls’ rights around the world. Plan International’s ambitious global strategy, launched in 2017, focused on helping 100 million girls learn, lead, decide and thrive. Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, CEO Plan International, recognized that this would require new ways of working, announcing that “we will only be able to achieve sustainable development and gender equality by forming new and innovative partnerships across different sectors”.

Plan International partnered with Accenture on this ambitious global strategy, recognizing that innovation and digital were crucial to achieving their goals. Accenture’s Innovation Architecture and Accenture Digital, including the London Innovation Centre, Liquid Studios and Fjord were all key to helping understand the areas in which to embed innovation into the organization.

The first phase of the partnership focused on three areas:

  • Child Sponsorship – attracting and retaining sponsors by enriching the sponsor experience

  • Girls Out Loud – amplifying the voice of girls to enable them to lead the gender discussion whilst allowing Plan International to effectively respond to their needs

  • Youth Economic Empowerment – enhance Plan International’s work on youth economic empowerment by exploring opportunities to close the loop on the employment journey, using virtual assistants to provide ongoing employment support and guidance

Through the partnership, Plan International has developed their global innovation strategy, aimed at creating an ‘enabling environment for innovation’.

The project was co-funded by Plan International and Accenture Corporate Citizenship as part of the ongoing Skills to Succeed partnership
