Technologies for patient engagement—Video

How the NHS’ Airedale improved care quality and efficiency.

Based on technology that was first used about eight years ago in UK prisons, Airedale now provides expert opinion and medical treatment plans using video conferencing on tablets or smartphones, or even a patient’s TV using a set top box. Specialist expertise can be provided right in the patient’s own home. The results benefit both the health system as well as its patients, through better resource utilization and better quality care. Highlights include 60 percent less attendances through A&E, 60 percent less use of bed days, and 45 percent of patients not needing to attend an outpatient or clinic.
