Job Description

Role: Mining Research Lead

Location: London

Salary: Upto £75,000  + excellent benefits

Introduction:

Accenture Research shapes trends and creates data-driven insights about the most pressing issues global organizations face. Combining the power of innovative research techniques with a deep understanding of our clients’ industries, our team of 300 researchers and analysts spans 23 countries and publishes hundreds of reports, articles and points of view every year. Our thought-provoking research – supported by proprietary data and partnerships with leading organizations guides our innovations and allows us to transform theories and fresh ideas into real-world solutions for our clients.

Accenture Research is an integral part of Accenture’s Innovation Architecture, and our focus spans four key areas:
  • Unlocking new business opportunities: helping Accenture understand markets and companies and identifying ways in which we can help clients become high-performance businesses and governments. A typical analysis might be an in-depth company diagnostic to look at a company’s financial, digital and strategic health or an overview of a sector of the market to identify trends or assess the impact of regulation.  Other analysis may center on client M&A activities; analysis of key market segments that are driving growth; impact of new technologies on operations and various upcoming industry disruptions.
  • Working directly with clients: about 20% of our research is on client engagements where we work alongside our colleagues from the consulting practice to provide research and industry expertise. Typical work with our clients might be to benchmark their digital strategy and activities against key players in the market; to analyze new and emerging competitors; identify untapped areas of growth or project future trends and their likely impact on the business.
  • Developing thought leadership: Accenture needs original, cutting-edge ideas to use with clients, the media and in conferences. Accenture Research helps identify big ideas, and develop those into market relevant, provocative and credible thought leadership articles and papers. Many of our thought leadership projects are published and quoted in the press.  Others form the basis for our issue-driven discussions with clients.  In all cases the research lead will be expected to contribute ideas, relevant research, and writing/synthesizing of key findings to these projects.
  • Supporting Accenture’s growth: our researchers advise the leaders of our practices on the opportunities for growth, on differentiating Accenture in the market and about our positioning relative to our competitors.

The Role

Most researchers specialize in an industry (such as Minerals) or Growth Platform (such as Strategy or Digital); some bring a research skill (such as survey research or financial analysis) and many combine two or more areas of expertise. On any given project we will bring together researchers with the best combination of industry, geographic and technical skills to provide the relevant expertise for the task.

Resources Research is a team of 20+ researchers aligned to the following industry segments:  Energy, Utilities and Chemicals & Natural Resources (CNR).  Specifically, the position will come within our CNR research group.

Accenture Research is expanding our Mining research competence to support Accenture’s consulting business with market leading thought leadership. The position advertised here is for a lead for the Mining research function and the role will involve helping us build expertise while providing thought leadership ideas and hands-on research and support to our consulting practice (this is very much a research role and not a purely management role).

The position reports to our CNR Research Team Lead and who is based in Houston. As well as being part of the global and local CNR team you will also be very much part of our cross-industry Resources research team, working with researchers also specializing in energy and utilities.

Qualifications

•  Knowledge of the minerals industry:  global markets; supply chain and manufacturing; industry players; critical metrics for evaluating company performance; cost drivers; back office functions and processes; technologies.  The position’s primary research focus will be on mining, with a strong secondary focus on steel.
•  Leadership:  as the global researcher in our natural resources team you’ll need excellent leadership and people management skills, including the ability to develop and motivate researchers in a team that is truly global and virtual.
•  Research skills:  able to develop new, viable, real-world thought leadership ideas; able to take an issue and turn it into a researchable question; able to scope the research effort and cost it accurately; able to use most (but not necessarily all) research techniques such as secondary database searching, company analysis, market analysis, strategic analysis frameworks, interview-based research and financial analysis.  You must have a sound knowledge of industry sources and be able to critique them.
•  Analytical/problem solving ability:  we want researchers who can draw out the implications of the research they do and tell a compelling, business-focused story about the data that is relevant to Accenture’s business and clients.
•  Personal credibility:  to be successful in this role you need to be able to build a strong working relationship with senior executives and industry leaders in Accenture and “hold your own” with them in discussions about the industry. So, you will be confident and able to speak knowledgeably about your subject; but never arrogant. You also need to be able to build relationships within our team and work with others in person and remotely on projects.
