Rob O’Connor was named Rising Star at the Movement to Work Awards
In the space of five years, Rob O’Connor has gone from someone with no experience in the corporate world, to becoming a valued technology expert with us and he’s just become the deserving winner of the Rising Star category at the Movement to Work Social Mobility Awards.
Originally from Cork, Ireland, Rob was raised on a council estate where he was faced with violence and crime on a regular basis. He left school with few qualifications, after struggling to take to his early education.
In 2015, he took part in the Accenture Movement to Work (MTW) Programme. With a keen interest in technology, following a successful three-week placement, Rob joined our Technology Apprenticeship Programme.
The programme has allowed him to pursue his interest in AI (Artificial Intelligence), innovation and emerging tech, as well as complete a degree in Digital and Technology Solutions, and become a certified Amazon Web Services (AWS) developer - a notable career milestone for any software engineer. He’s also gained experience in several complex technologies and established himself as an emerging tech expert in this field.
As the key developer on the Homecare project, an Alexa app and web portal that offers day-to-day help for elderly people in their own homes, he and the team successfully took the project from proof-of-concept to a production-ready platform. The app was subsequently showcased at several large conferences. He’s also been instrumental in several key projects delivered for a number of our clients.
Over the past four years, Rob’s continued to be a key ambassador for the Movement to Work Programme, appearing live on Sky News to speak about apprenticeships to school leavers. He regularly visits schools and careers fairs to discuss technology with young people and to present live demos showcasing exciting technology.
A credit to his determination and talent, Rob’s success makes him a worthy winner of the Rising Star award. An example of a young person who has driven himself forward, receiving three promotions within two years, now holding the position of ‘Advanced Application Development Senior Analyst’. Not only has he excelled professionally with us, he’s committed to helping others who grow up facing similar challenges. And, his journey through Accenture’s Movement to Work programme makes him a source of inspiration for other young people looking to fulfil their potential.
