The team at our UK Advanced Technology Centre in Newcastle are working on some of the most innovative technology projects around. With its continued importance to the Accenture business, the Centre has also become an increasingly attractive career destination in the North East.
Based in the city’s Cobalt Business Park, our UK Advanced Technology Centre is home to the teams who provide our technology services to private and public-sector clients, from major broadcasters to central government departments to leading global companies. And while we’re a truly global company – with 459,000 employees serving clients in more than 120 countries – we understand the importance of a strong local presence. That’s why we’ve put down such deep roots in the North East.
There’s a strong focus on innovation, delivered by teams who develop proofs of concepts and demonstrate the latest technologies to clients. On top of this, the Newcastle Innovation Hub, brings in expertise in data engineering, advanced analytics and artificial intelligence.
Accenture’s investment in our Newcastle operations has broadened the service offering to clients. In turn this has added to the diversity of skills and talent here and provided greater opportunity for our employees to develop and showcase their abilities. We’re keen to bring in new recruits with a wide range of tech-related skills, including digital, programming, testing, technical architecture, DevOps, programme management services and service management. And, the Accenture Connected Learning Classroom at Cobalt Business Park provides unparalleled access to training courses from across our global network.
Did you know, the North East was home to the first ever Accenture technology apprentices back in 2013 and the programme has now helped more than 150 young people complete a degree in software engineering while getting on-the-job, practical experience and earning a salary. Those who graduate on our technology apprenticeship programme are offered a job here. Overall, the focus on driving employment opportunities in the region has led to us doubling our local workforce.
Allan King, Managing Director, Accenture’s UK Advanced Technology Centre, notes “Over the last three years we’ve doubled our Newcastle workforce to around 1,100 across our Technology, Operations and Consulting workforces, including taking on more than 150 apprentices. We serve great, innovative clients that are pioneering new digital technologies in diverse fields from government to financial services.”
Yogita Gosain is one of our Software Developers benefitting from the expansion in Newcastle. As she explains, “You get to work in different tools and technologies at the same time. Every day it’s a new challenge.”
Web Developer Ryan Allan is impressed with the changes in Newcastle too, “The new IT at Accenture is fantastic because it’s new technology. You can automate things, you’ve got robotics. Accenture gives you a bit more flexibility to learn what you want, so it’s good to learn different areas of the business.”
The Centre’s links to the Newcastle community have also grown stronger, especially as our staff are given three days’ leave a year to contribute charity projects – the focus is on fundraising for local charities. The perks on offer also explain why Accenture is proving popular with tech professionals in the region.
These perks include an on-site gym and restaurant, bi-annual community events held at Newcastle’s landmark buildings and a substantial investment in engagement and training initiatives for all staff. There are also film nights where we hire an entire cinema to show the latest blockbuster for family and friends. There are even theatre, music and sports tickets available in weekly raffles.
