Challenge

The automotive industry is steering toward a future without drivers. The benefits: Less accidents, greater fuel efficiency, decreased pollution, and more freedom for car operators.

To get on the road toward autonomous driving, Volvo Cars, the premium automaker, joined forces with Autoliv*, the world’s largest automotive safety supplier, to create a new joint venture called, Zenuity (A name that combines the words “zenith” with “ingenuity”) The aim of the startup: to develop software for autonomous driving and driver assistance systems for the global automotive market. To help put this burgeoning effort on the road—and fast—Accenture was asked to support the preparation of Zenuity by supporting the installation of the company’s ERP system.

The timeline for creating the new organization was aggressive. Less than six months. And involved working with the central organization in Gothenburg, Sweden, with offshoot locations in Munich, Germany and Detroit, Michigan.

Strategy and solution

Working with an agile approach that included parallel processing critical workstreams, the team rapidly gathered requirements for every aspect of the new company’s financial operations. That included quickly identifying the foundational system, then defining and deploying a host of processes like purchasing, sales, time and expense management and GL accounting. In short, all the necessary financial areas critical for running a business.

Accenture, together with Zenuity’s management, determined that SAP would be the best provider to meet the needs of Zenuity. Specifically, it was decided to deploy SAP’s Business ByDesign software-as-a-service solution, a move that allowed for rapid start-up: from contract signing to workable prototype scenarios within days. Another benefit of Business ByDesign: It’s a pre-built solution with ready-made configurations and templates that drives transparency across all business areas.

The approach would help Zenuity continually improve operations and hold down cost, while realizing comprehensive functionality. Rapidly.

Transformation

Zenuity continues to grow and expand, achieving a working organizational structure at breathtaking speed, thanks to the quick decision making of the Volvo Cars and Autoliv* teams, Accenture’s agile methodology, and the smooth go-live of the ERP system.

Now the company is ready to navigate toward a bright future. In fact, Zenuity is slated to have its first driver assistance products available for sale by 2019 with autonomous driving technologies following shortly thereafter.
