Job Summary:

The Legal Counsel - Ethics & Compliance, Data Privacy is a full-time manager role to be filled by an individual with at least 5 years’ experience and/or expertise in the data privacy field.  The role sits within Accenture’s Ethics and Compliance function in Legal. It reports into the Senior Legal Counsel – Ethics & Compliance, Data Privacy.

Key Responsibilities:

The role will focus on Accenture’s internal compliance and governance in (i) providing subject matter expertise and support to corporate functions globally in respect of data privacy, data security, legal compliance, risk management and privacy by design and (ii) managing and supporting the governance of Accenture’s global DP program, including policies, training and awareness, international transfers strategy and external relations.  

  • Act as expert on data privacy issues for topics related to HR, procurement, finance, marketing, IT Security, IT, recruitment and any other business or corporate functions as needed.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for all data privacy compliance support requests relating to assigned topics or functions.
  • Work with global DP team to implement and/or improve on tools and processes in the review of new internal projects and "privacy by design" methodology.
  • Provide advice and participate in company response to data privacy and security incidents and subsequent notifications to individuals and regulators.
  • Participate in data privacy audit and monitoring activities.
  • Support the Senior Legal Counsel – Ethics & Compliance, Data Privacy (Policy & Governance) to propose, design and implement policies, guidance, procedures and rules in support of the definition of our global DP program, and of regular program updates, and ensure the DP team’s regular reporting.
  • Develop and maintain our DP training and awareness strategy and training material on assigned topics; provide training as needed.
  • Maintain and update our international data transfers strategy, including implementation of our Binding Corporate Rules and similar tools.
  • In close cooperation with the Government Relations team, monitor and report on legal changes, including new laws and regulatory guidance and enforcement, in the field of DP and in adjacent areas; keep abreast of technology trends and developments and their impact, and develop guidance for internal and external audiences.

Relationships:

            Reports to:  Senior Legal Counsel – Ethics & Compliance, Data Privacy.                  

            Key Relationships: 

  • Legal, including Government Relations, Sales & Delivery, Alliances, Offerings, Geographic Support, Disputes & Litigation, and external counsel;
  • Corporate Functions including CIO, Information Security, HR and Employee Relations
  • Geographic leadership and the Data Privacy Officer network;
  • Data Privacy and Security consulting practice;
  • Related subject matter experts (e.g. security professionals, PCI, government compliance, records retention SMEs),
  • Privacy professionals at client and peer companies; and
  • Regulatory points of contact.

Qualifications:
 
Education:  J.D. or equivalent; qualified lawyer with 5+ years of experience with applied data privacy law. CIPP or comparable certifications, or willingness to obtain such, required.
 
Work Experience:  Minimum 5 years of experience in global data privacy function preferably in a major law firm or a multinational corporation. Experience and expertise with major national data privacy legislation and cross border issues.  A network of industry and data privacy regulatory contacts.  Experience in monitoring trends and developments and translating those into actionable projects. Training experience desirable.
 
Work Requirements:  Proficiency in English (both spoken and written). Travel required as needed.  Must have ability to effectively work and manage resources remotely.
 
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • Demonstrated command of data privacy, data security, employment law and related laws and regulations;
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, understand and assess trends, and curiosity for new technology;
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface with all levels of management and staff, work cross-culturally, and represent Accenture externally;
  • Confidence and credibility in dealing with internal management, senior personnel at client and peer companies, data privacy regulators, and industry bodies;
  • Highly motivated and proactive, with the ability to articulate company vision and policy, and to seek out areas of risk and priority;
  • Ability to consistently apply good judgment;
  • Builds and maintains a network of good working relationships both internally and externally;
  • Adapts nimbly to changing needs within the business; and
  • Able to speak for the Company’s interests to both internal and external audiences.
