Zurich: New national operations from system design to regulatory approval

Accenture helps Zurich Insurance expand into Colombia by leading system integration and driving the regulatory approval process.

OPPORTUNITY

Zurich Insurance employs 55,000 employees in over 170 countries. It is headquartered in Switzerland and maintains a leading position among the world's largest companies.

As part of an expansion strategy in Latin America, Zurich Insurance is starting operations in Colombia, and is ready to define products and lines of business for Property & Casualty, Liability, Financial Lines, Surety, Marine and Engineering for the Corporate Sector. Accenture was tasked with defining and implementing integration and printing architecture to support printing, reporting and interfaces with other systems. A key goal was to configure and customize all modules of the Core System based on business processes in agreement with the Zurich Way. Accenture was also the system integrator, able to proceed on a very aggressive timeline employing an innovative mix of project techniques and providing mixed on-offshore resources for development and testing.

"Accenture was able to complete implementation of a core insurance system on budget and on time in under a year, and to receive approval of a license to operate as an insurance company on time. "

SOLUTION

The methodology employed in the project was an innovative mix of Agile processes for core and waterfall for non-core functions. Accenture provided onshore resources from Colombia and Brazil in each insurance process to coordinate and design the business requirements, and deployed offshore specialists in TIA technologies to develop and implement the solutions through Accenture's India Delivery Center. A combined onshore-offshore testing team defined a test strategy and executed the testing plan.

RESULTS

Working with experts from Zurich's teams, Accenture was able to complete implementation of a core insurance system on budget and on time in under a year, and to receive approval of a license to operate as an insurance company on time. In fact, the project was notable as being the first insurer in Colombia to be approved at 100 percent compliance. The teams produced 23 products across six lines of business to cover Zurich's desired markets, including one of the first implementations of the TIA re-insurance module and a remarkable new implementation of a next-generation print system, with performance improved beyond past implementations. Properly configured, the TIA system could calculate thousands of quotes a day, for millions of high-performing policies.

This project has provided not only an expansion into a new market but also a strong foundation for exploring the implementation of a new, advanced system in Mexico and across Europe.
