As one of the largest telecoms businesses in the world with more than 400 million customers, Vodafone has operations in more than 30 countries and network partnerships in 50 more. In order to achieve global efficiencies across its organization, Vodafone implemented project EVO, the largest business and IT transformation in the company’s history, with a major component being the implementation of a SAP-based ERP platform.

Vodafone wanted to build on the success of EVO by accelerating its financial close processes for all of its operating companies. This required finding a way to reduce manual interventions, speed up the time to load data between the SAP Business Warehouse and the ECC system as well as the means to spot and correct any errors before the data was loaded into the financial consolidation system.
Accenture worked with Vodafone to implement SAP HANA – SAP’s in-memory computing platform – to create a faster financial close process. Accenture’s Innovation Lab worked closely with the Vodafone Customer Solution Adoption Team in a phased approach to demonstrating, testing and rolling out the HANA solution. With test results clearly establishing the business case, the teams worked to fully integrate HANA into the EVO landscape, create and build the data models and fully test the solution before making it available to users across all local markets in Europe.
As system integrator, Accenture took responsibility for driving the project at all stages, from gathering initial requirements to post-go live support.
Implementing a HANA-based solution has significantly increased the speed of Vodafone’s financial close processes. Data transfers now happen with a 96% time saving compared with the previous solution, with data processing on HANA 1000X as fast as the standard business warehouse.
Overall, the solution has delivered a whole day’s saving each month. This gives Vodafone a far more efficient reporting process that enables earlier decision-making, greater process control and frees-up the Vodafone finance team to devote their time to more value-adding activities. The success of the project has opened up possibilities for deploying HANA in other areas.
