This vision led to the launch and ongoing transformation of Accenture People, an online social networking platform that enables employees to tap into the collective, worldwide knowledge of peers to solve client problems anytime, anywhere.

OPPORTUNITY

Collaboration, team building and knowledge sharing can be challenging and complex, especially among Accenture’s globally dispersed workforce of more than a quarter of a million employees. To bridge such a distance gap, Accenture’s internal IT organization set out to create a collaborative business network, one that leveraged interactive mobile capabilities, social networking tools and collaboration applications to allow for fast, real-time interaction. This vision led to the launch and ongoing transformation of Accenture People, an online social networking platform that enables employees to tap into the collective, worldwide knowledge of peers to solve client problems anytime, anywhere.

Introduced in 2008, Accenture People continues to evolve, drawing from emerging technologies and the best digital capabilities of Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to offer a familiar social media experience that allows employees to share expertise and learn more about key business issues. Accenture People provides employees with a platform to interact from their work station or while on the go, real-time with peers, create synergies and build alliances within various industries, geographies and markets.

Since its inception in 2008, Accenture People continues to become more agile, leveraging new technologies at speed to create a digital, socially-centric way for employees to work together. Sharing knowledge and expertise is now accelerated through robust digital capabilities. There is an Accenture People directory that houses employee skills and experience. Despite not knowing who to contact, employees can easily find assets, experts, and special topic pages by simply entering a key word or phrase into the directory function. An enhanced social networking and collaboration newsfeed called the “Stream” aggregates employee discussions, comments, and social feeds from various company applications to deliver critical insights on relevant issues.

The newest version of Accenture People offers a personalized approach to collaboration:

  • User Persona pages—designated pages that highlight popular topics or events within Accenture. Such a page enables virtual employee conversations around a particular Accenture news item or hot topic.

  • Enhanced blogging capabilities that make it easier for employees to share their unique point of view on a subject, business matter or project.

  • A Collaboration tab that tells employees which colleagues are following their customized page, further creating opportunities for networking.

RESULTS

Today Accenture People is a driving force within Accenture’s digital business fostering a culture of interconnectedness and high performance. Metrics show that Accenture People empowers Accenture professionals to collaborate in a more efficient and effective way:

  • Generating collaborative dialogue and sharing innovative ideas is made easier through the capability of blogging—with nearly 2,000 blog posts created monthly, generating more than 150K views during the same time frame.

  • In an average month, close to 400,000 “Stream” events are created, enhancing and streamlining the exchange of information and decision-making across Accenture.

  • Mobile access and ease of use has led to about 500,000 people searches per month, demonstrating the critical role this tool serves in helping employees gain access to colleagues and information.

  • Accenture People is a proven business networking tool with close to 68 percent of the workforce including a personal photo and/or updated credentials on their page. Additionally, new hires who actively collaborate through Accenture People show significantly less year-one attrition.
