WOMEN: GENDER DIVERSITY AND EQUALITY

How Continual Learning and Mentors Cultivate Success

By Anne O'Riordan, Senior Managing Director, Life Sciences, Accenture Consulting, Hong Kong
"In the right supportive environment, you can really help people to be hugely successful."

My philosophy is that we should learn something new every day. I think it keeps you young, and it keeps you interested. To stay ahead and stay equipped, we have to learn constantly. Continual learning is an inherent part of what we do.

In the right supportive environment, you can really help people to be hugely successful. Mentoring is essential to everyone’s success. I believe there should be a formal mentoring program for all employees. Informal mentoring really helps too.

We all need someone who is there and looking out for you. The best thing you can do in a people-based organization is to mentor someone else and help them grow in their career.

There also is great value in external mentoring. For example, the Women’s Foundation in Hong Kong has a program encouraging members to mentor women from other companies. This external mentoring creates a phenomenal support network among women in the Hong Kong business community. It benefits both the mentors and the mentees.

Mentoring helps people to learn and truly makes a difference.

Here’s a quote I love that underscores this idea: “Tell me, and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I learn.” People generally attribute this quote to Benjamin Franklin, but some say it’s an ancient Chinese proverb. Either way, I love its essence and think it’s true.
