He has shown me that we are all unique, and we all have something to contribute.

When my first child, Gabi, was born, I continued to work and take care of her. My second child, my son, Teozinho, is a special needs child. He was born prematurely at eight months, with Down syndrome and a heart disease. I knew he would have to undergo heart surgery to survive.

I panicked. I didn’t think I could look after him and work at the same time.

I realized I had strong support from my family and friends, and at my work with global professional services company Accenture. When I learned that Teozinho would need heart surgery, I asked for help at work.

I wanted to have a fixed routine, instead of moving from project to project. My workplace has been fantastic, and I have been able to handle work and care for my children.

My son has taught me a lot. This seemingly fragile child is very strong. He is so thankful for life. He has shown me that we are all unique, and we all have something to contribute.

We can better understand what life has to offer when we begin to understand that people are unique individuals.
