How to build a presence on LinkedIn as a grad

LinkedIn has become a very important social platform for networking across, connecting to and finding jobs in the professional world. Every recruiter you meet and contact you make will check you out here. Accenture recruiter, Hemisha, shares her top tips for job-ready graduates.

Before you start applying for your first job, make sure your LinkedIn profile is ready.

  • Upload a professional photograph – While we don’t recommend including a headshot on your resume, it’s a good idea to upload a photo to your LinkedIn profile. Why? Because people are more likely to click on your profile if it contains a pic. Also, if you connect with a recruiter and then meet them at a careers fair, they’ll be able to recognise you! Your photo should be of you and only you – not your friends, your family or your cat! Make sure it’s a recent shot of you, ideally in business attire.

  • Keep your headline short and to the point – It should tell the reader about your area of study and one genuine area of interest that’s relevant to your career aspirations, perhaps: “Computer Scientist | AI enthusiast”.

  • Write ‘About’ in one sentence – Tell the reader who you are and what you’re looking for: “Computer Science graduate seeking consulting work in AI.” You don’t have to write an essay. (For more tips on storytelling, check out my colleague Nivi’s blog).

  • Include relevant qualifications, awards, scholarships and work experience – Recruiters are interested in degrees, professional certifications, awards, internships and volunteering experience. Only include relevant information, so not your RSA or whether you were a Prefect at high school! If you’re claiming to have leadership or customer service skills, make sure your experience backs this up.

  • Proofread everything! – Don’t let typos and silly grammatical errors ruin your first impression.

  • Work to get some endorsements – These are always of interest to recruiters. But make sure they’re professional testimonials, not personal references from family and friends.

  • Follow organisations that line up with your professional aspirations – If you’re interested in consulting, follow companies like Deloitte, McKinsey and Accenture.

  • Use your ‘career interests’ setting – Turn it on to let recruiters know you’re looking for work. While you’re at it, don’t forget to apply for a grad role with us.

  • Keep your posts on point – LinkedIn is a professional network. It’s not Facebook or Insta. It’s ok to be casual (after all, we’re all human!), but make sure the subject matter of your posts is relevant to the channel.

  • Be courteous about connecting with people – Only connect with people you’ve had contact with or who you’ve been encouraged to reach out to. If you meet me at a careers conference, I might ask you to connect with me. That will give you access to heaps of senior people at Accenture. But don’t add them without meeting them first. Most of all, be patient. No one expects you to have 500+ connections in your first few months. Building a professional network is a gradual process.

With a carefully constructed profile – simple, clean and professional – LinkedIn can make a great impression on recruiters and help you land your dream graduate role. Hopefully these tips will help you start building out a presence that gets you noticed by the right people.
