What I’ve learned from my internship at Accenture
By: Tony Lao

My name is Tony Lao and I was a Business Analyst Intern for six months at Accenture. I’m currently taking a double degree at Monash University: Bachelor of Business (Accounting) and Bachelor of Business (Banking & Finance), graduating in 2019.

My goal of getting an internship was so that I could gain industry exposure, supplement my studies with practical experience and get a feel of what I might want to do when I graduate. Fortunately, I received an internship offer from Accenture which happened to be one of my top choices as an employer, mainly because of its unique culture and focus on innovation and technology.

Throughout my internship, I realised that:

Each day is a surprise. There were no two days where I did the exact same thing. Some days consisted of back-to-back internal meetings, whereas others would lead to meeting with clients and stakeholders and working together to achieve their desired outcomes. I was fortunate to work across Accenture’s different businesses—Strategy, Consulting, Digital, Technology and Operations.

Who you work with makes a big difference. Aside from the projects I worked on, the people I worked with also made my internship experience extremely enjoyable and interesting. I was able to connect with lots of different people by talking about my hobbies, which include powerlifting, travelling and finding Melbourne’s best brunch spots. One of those connections I made eventually led to getting myself involved in a really interesting project!

I also learned plenty of new skills, such as design thinking, which will be very useful when doing group work at and outside of school, and advanced Excel techniques, which will help me in some of my remaining Finance units.

"My one advice to students looking for internship programs is to not let your degree choice hold you back from applying at Accenture."

The company embraces all talents and backgrounds, so it doesn’t matter what you are studying, as long as you have an interest in all things technology, I highly recommend applying!
