Hi, I am Dimple Vagal; I am an Application Development Analyst at Accenture based in Auckland. I have my Bachelors in Business Information Management, and I am now doing my Masters in Information Systems while I work. In just a year at Accenture, I have managed to work in a couple of different industries (some which I knew nothing about) and a couple of different places.
My Accenture Grad journey started off by going to Wellington for Orientation and Malaysia for training. The training helped us prepare for what we might face on our first project, what it’s like being in a team with strangers and common challenges we might face. After a long day in a classroom, we had a packed program of events to get to know our colleagues from all over the world which was fantastic, as it made you realise the opportunities that lie ahead of you! The training and support provided to the grads at Accenture is incomparable and is the best I have experienced.
I’d say the top five great things about working in Accenture are;
People – Right from day one you become part of the team rather than being a newcomer, people take time to get to know you individually over coffee, lunches, etc. They ensure you have everything you need, explain the tasks, and create a supportive environment for you to learn in.
Work hard & play hard – We work extremely hard, but at the same time, we do a lot of social activities. Some I’ve done are sailing, pub quiz, wine tasting, restaurant hops, etc. It is a great way to get back to our home office for a day to catch up with everyone and keep up to date with things.
Travel – As part of your project or training you get the opportunity to travel. Even as a graduate depending on your project, you get to travel around. The experience is great, it makes you more independent, challenges you and you learn so much.
Never a dull day – because you are on different projects you never do the same things over and over again. It gives you the ability to see what you like and what you don’t. It helps you gain skills and learn new things. No project is ever the same, the people, work, location even clients are different. Additionally, if you do not like what you are doing now, you have the comfort of knowing you will be doing something different soon.
Training – As a grad, you are not expected to have all the answers, you get provided all the training you need. Accenture has an incredible training environment, and through a range of different mediums, you can learn on the job, in a classroom, self-learning tools, external training etc. The list is endless when I first joined Accenture the information overload that occurred in the first month was unbelievable, and you just learn to process that much information.
I will conclude by honestly saying, I wasn’t sure about this job when I said yes to it, I didn’t even think I would last a year but looking back, it was the best decision I made for all the reasons above and more.
