Zebra Technologies: Driving shareholder value through acquisition

In 2014, Zebra Technologies, an industry leader in barcode and enterprise printing, asset tracking, Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, and motion and location sensing, acquired Motorola Solutions’ Enterprise business. In doing so, Zebra more than doubled its size from a $1 billion company to combined revenue of approximately $3.5 billion.

Overview

The merger of these organizations enables Zebra to position itself as an industry leader, gain scale, and strategically shift to become a solution provider for an increasingly connected world. However, Zebra needed to quickly and effectively integrate the companies to achieve these goals.

Zebra recognized the risk associated with doing its own merger integration and enlisted assistance of strategic partners—including Accenture—to help. Initially, Accenture was brought on as Zebra’s strategic partner for pre-implementation planning and program management. However, Accenture’s role was expanded to include management of the program office, with responsibility for overseeing process and tools integration in North America and Europe, consolidating two Oracle platforms into one global platform, and managing release and deployment across all of the systems integration efforts.

Additional Accenture teams were also brought on board to support other aspects of the merger, including: developing Zebra’s target operating model, helping Zebra launch a new channel partner program, and assisting Zebra with cultural change to become one integrated company.

By applying Accenture’s deep strategy, consulting and technology expertise, Zebra has been able to swiftly—and successfully—integrate these organizations.

Zebra is leveraging the benefits of this acquisition and is well-positioned to become a leading technology innovator and provider of enterprise asset intelligence solutions. The company is well on its way to realizing $150M in synergies from the merger and is outpacing market growth.

Accenture and Zebra have also taken this successful relationship a step further to deliver value to mutual clients. Focusing on common interests, such as the development of the Internet of Things ecosystem, Accenture and Zebra are working together on a variety of innovative initiatives.
