Boosting passenger convenience at Trans Link Systems with account-based ticketing

OVERVIEW

Accenture is providing Trans Link Systems (TLS) with an innovative account-based ticketing solution and service for Dutch public transport operators. In just a few short months, TLS made travel more convenient by enabling passengers to ride now, pay later. The cloud-based solution also helps reduce costs and boost travel with discounts, incentives and loyalty rewards based on travel behavior.

OPPORTUNITY

Trans Link Systems (TLS) operates OV-chipkaart, a contactless, pre-paid smart card for all public transport in the Netherlands. TLS and its public transport operators wanted to increase customer convenience by allowing passengers to ride now and pay later using the same OV-chipkaart across all modes of transport.

SOLUTION

TLS collaborated with Accenture to develop an innovative account-based ticketing solution using the cloud-based Accenture Fare Management Solution (AFMS) based on Microsoft Dynamics and Azure technologies. In only three months, they launched a 1,000-user pilot for the Rotterdam operator, RET. Following the pilot’s success, they are rolling out the service to other operators. The highly scalable solution easily integrates with TLS´ existing pre-paid scheme to capture operator business transactions, invoice passengers, collect customer payments, and process clearing and settlement.

RESULTS

For passengers, travel is more convenient and accessible, with no worries about topping up cards or maintaining minimum amounts for travel. Family members and employees can now be invoiced through a single account. The solution also helps reduce sales and distribution costs over time, as well as boost travel. A vast range of innovative travel products can be easily added to the scheme without the need to load them onto the OV-chipkaart via ticketing machines—significantly reducing costs and time to market. Operators can now offer discounts, incentives and loyalty rewards based on actual travel behavior. Since the solution supports any media, passengers will also be able to use new technologies like contactless bank cards and smartphones in the future. Account Based Travel is an important and strategic step towards the future transit payment.
