Max Bögl: Product Lifecycle Management for high performance

Accenture helped Max Bögl meet the demand for wind power energy in Europe.

Overview

Max Bögl is a large, privately-owned construction company based in Germany that offers expertise in high speed rail construction, high performance concrete machining, and wind power structural support, among other custom construction services.

Opportunity
Governments and companies are using more clean and renewable energy sources, providing Max Bögl with a significant opportunity to expand its support of the wind power sector by designing and building the towers that support wind power generators. Tower development is a complex undertaking; there are over 20 different types of towers in use, and each one represents input from different internal departments (e.g., design, construction, on-site erection) to meet customer and governmental specifications. Consequently, Max Bögl needed PLM capabilities and specialized IT infrastructure that allowed it to streamline the engineer-to-order process.

Solution

Accenture brought industry-specific insight and overall project management capability to help Max Bögl reduce time-to-implementation and costs while conforming to the mutually agreed quality standards. Accenture brought proven practices from its extensive work within the energy and utilities industries, including leading practices for Plant Lifecycle Management. The project team combined Siemens’ Teamcenter software with its own assets and methodologies to enhance engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) processes.

To enable the company capture all the benefits of the new solutions, Accenture also provided PLM operations support that included redesigned workflows, configuration management and change management.

The project team also implemented new business processes with Teamcenter to allow consolidated, transparent views of bill of materials (BOM).

Siemens’ Teamcenter platform facilitated faster data exchange, and data and project management, and its NX solution enabled digital integration of civil, structural and mechanical engineering components. Accenture customized the Teamcenter application to adopt the Building Information Model standard used in construction industries; the application now allows integration of construction specific engineering tools that are meaningful to Max Bögl and its customers.ion Model standard used in construction industries; the application now allows integration of construction specific engineering tools that are meaningful to Max Bögl and its customers.

Results

The approach enabled holistic, end-to-end business process coordination to decrease the risk of order related non-conformances issues and budget overruns. Key performance metrics, specifically order to delivery time, have been significantly improved. The solutions selected also allow Max Bögl to efficiently integrate varied engineering inputs, while building a comprehensive and reusable record of design and quality data.

The LDAP and SAP interfaces provide a common, user-friendly platform which seamlessly integrates with the company’s main business application architecture.

The replicable approach continues to benefit the company in a variety of ways by enabling Max Bögl to:

  • Deliver customized, high performance structures that increase the use of renewable energy,

  • Leverage a proven foundation of PLM capabilities for the company’s other businesses such as concrete and steel production to follow.
