BT global services: Global network migration program

Accenture helped BT Global Services migrate customers from its legacy network platform to a new multiprotocol label switching network.

Overview

BT Global Services, part of BT Group plc, provides managed network IT services to business and government organizations.

It operates globally and delivers locally to many of the world’s large multinational corporations.

Its key assets include 21CN—its global “packet” based Internet Protocol network; data centers; solution design and integration professionals and IT security experts.

BT Global Services wanted to offer faster and more reliable service delivery to its global enterprise customers and drive down costs associated with running a dedicated legacy network for specific data services and applications.

To do this, it needed to migrate customers from its legacy network platform to a new multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) network, capable of supporting a variety of products and services.

Opportunity

BT Global Services faced several challenges:

  • High throughput required to shut down the old platform within the targeted timescales.

  • Complex delivery structures that spanned multiple geographies including mainland Europe, Asia-Pacific, the United Kingdom and the United States, with multiple supplier, customer and internal dependencies.

  • Customers that required the uninterrupted provision of business critical services

  • Customers that needed significant persuasion through demonstrable experience to convince them to undertake a migration that could potentially affect service.

Accenture coordinated the complex migration of nearly 200 customers across 350 sites in the United Kingdom, United States and mainland Europe.

Solution

Accenture delivered a solution that spanned across program management, technical delivery and process reengineering. In addition, we provided large-scale delivery methods and tools to assist BT in managing the migration life cycle of its most complex, large-scale banking and financial markets customers.

Working as a cohesive team together with BT professionals, Accenture coordinated the complex migration of nearly 200 customers across 350 sites moving them from a legacy network platform to a new global MPLS network. Accenture also helped BT by providing clear end-to-end visibility of migration activities for ongoing management decision making.

Accenture successfully coordinated the complex migration of 200 of BT Global Services’ most complex global customers and accelerated delivery across major regions, enabling BT to achieve critical customer facing benefits and internal cost reductions.
