Amy Yin
Mainland China Portfolio Lead, Shanghai

CLIENT ROLE

I am the Portfolio Lead for our Communications, Media & Technology clients in mainland China, focused on identifying and exploring next wave opportunities with local clients.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

When I returned to work after the birth of my first child, I took the project director role from a client executive who had recently left Accenture. For the program that we were working on to succeed, I quickly realized that we needed to strengthen communications between the China and global teams. I focused on both helping the local team to realize the impact of its work on the whole program, which encouraged more proactive communication globally, and on working hand-in-hand with the global team to refine the program schedule. Our strengthened, trust-based relationship and global diversity helped us to deliver the best possible value for the client.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

“Build your own brand through each assignment” – I received this advice during my first consulting project and always come back to it. I always take ownership for my work. No matter how big or small the role, it’s an opportunity to shape how others perceive you. I’ve passed on the same advice to my team and found it a good way to engage and motivate.
“Prioritize work, life and everything else honestly and communicate openly” – It is very hard to achieve work/life balance all the time. In my view, it’s about prioritizing what comes first during different times and different stages of your life. When competing demands do become too difficult to manage, it’s important to be able to communicate openly to seek a solution.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

In the early stages of my Accenture career in China, I didn’t see many female leaders around me. However, an Accenture Managing Director, who was my project manager back then, taught me the meaning of ‘stewardship’ and showed me a career path that might work for me. It’s now been over 10 years since I joined Accenture and we’ve made great progress. A good gender balance among our leadership helps deliver greater value to our clients and inspires the next generation of female leaders.

"Having a keen perspective the industry’s direction, across multiple time horizons, allows us to help clients get results today, and re-shape their organizations for long term success."

- Delphine Rivé

VIEW PROFILE

Delphine Rivé
Electronics & High Tech Industry Lead, Europe and Latin America, London

CLIENT ROLE

As the lead for Electronics & High Tech, I had the chance to direct a digital transformation initiative for Canon Europe. I was responsible for addressing how the company would directly engage with their customers, throughout the customer journey.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

I am an accomplished athlete and still practice my sport at an international level. This has helped me to stay focused and determined in all kinds of situations. I always try and think about different ways or strategies for winning and look at things in the medium or long term. In sport you need a medium or long term strategy to succeed, and the same holds true in consulting. Having a keen perspective on where the industry is heading, across multiple time horizons allows us to collaborate on solutions that help clients not only get results today, but re-shape their organizations for success in the longer term.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

In the early stages of my career, 20 years ago, there were not so many French women working in the UK – instead of feeling I was a minority I used it as a way to differentiate myself and bring forward my point of view. The same principle applies today, working in an industry where most of the C-Level executives are men. What is important to me is to stay true to who I am – and not to try to be or act like somebody else. I never compromise my values. Integrity and collaboration are always at the heart of what I do in my life or at work.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

The Electronics & High Tech Industry is short of talent. Young graduates are attracted by companies such as Facebook or Google rather than established technology companies which may seem old-fashioned in comparison. Competing in this war for talent means boosting the talent pool – including appealing to more women and recruiting women at the early stages of their careers.

VIEW PROFILE

Tamae Kobayashi
Global Client Account Lead for Sony, Tokyo

CLIENT ROLE

I am the Global Client Account lead for Sony, helping connect our companies across geographies and functions so that we can leverage the best ideas and develop truly innovative solutions.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

I have been working for more than 15 years with our global Electronics & High Tech clients. In the early stages of my consulting career, I had many opportunities to work outside of Japan with Accenture people from around the world. After becoming a manager, I was regularly leading diverse teams to deliver our services to clients.

Now, as a Global Client Account Lead and a member of the Communications, Media & Technology leadership team for Asia Pacific, I still work with diverse consulting, research and tech lab teams in different regions around the world. I think those experiences in the earlier stages of my career have equipped me with the right organizational and people skills to bring the best of Accenture to our clients.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

The communications, media and technology industries are at the forefront of digitization. Success in this rapidly changing environment depends upon an ability to innovate, which in turn involves leveraging internal, client and ecosystem connections to bring a variety of perspectives to the table. For example, I regularly exchange information with our European and US teams and have our global team provide objective feedback. This provides a valuable checkpoint, helping us avoid the pitfall of local “groupthink”.

I also believe in speaking up for what you want, rather than quietly brooding on problems. It is important to develop your relationships so that when uncomfortable situations arise, you can deal with them honestly and openly. Don’t expect that others will see things from your perspective but stick to your guns when you need to and stay focused on the outcomes.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

When I need to develop new services, I make a conscious effort to solicit opinions from a variety of people including men, women and younger team members. This is how I live by the values of inclusion and diversity. I truly believe that when we enhance diversity within our teams, we are able to bring a wider range of perspectives, leading to more innovative solutions for our clients.

VIEW PROFILE

Sarah Beardsley Sarah Beardsley
Client Account Lead and Management Consulting Lead for the Midwest, Chicago

CLIENT ROLE

I am the Client Account Lead at an Internet of Things technology company in Chicago, Zebra Technologies. I also serve as the Management Consulting lead for the Midwest region. My personal concentration is in Customer & Channels, since I spent most of my career in industry, leading sales, marketing and product management operations teams.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

It’s quite unusual for a managing director to join Accenture with so much experience at other firms. My many years of being a client are a big influence on my approach to my client service role, and give me a pretty unique perspective. People often tell me I serve as a sort of virtual “Google translate” between consulting language and client language. Knowing what it’s like on the other side of the table, I try hard to keep what we are trying to say straightforward and to personalize any approach to a client’s specific goals.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

Women can feel confident in standing up for what is right and being upfront with what they are willing to take on. They can speak up to make sure their perspective is considered. For much of my career, I tried to smile and shrug off things that weren’t inherently fair or right. As I grew into my roles, I found that setting standards for myself and others was not only the right thing to do, it is what those around me expected. Had I just “gone along”, it would have sent the wrong message to my female peers.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

We see great gender balance for people at the beginning of their careers but it tends to disappear as careers progress. This is something we can change. We have to take advantage of everyone’s talents and enthusiasms. Recognizing diverse contributions is the best way to inspire, as well as to bring the best industry and consulting solutions to help our clients transform. Diversity of thought and experience count as well. It’s not just about gender balance.

Director of Operations, Amsterdam

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

I was part of our sales organization for many years. The great thing about that role was that I could help shape leading edge solutions for our clients. I relish a challenge and always feel the most energized when working in pioneering territory. At Accenture, I know we can always find the right industry expertise, combined with the business insights and experience to help companies re-invent themselves. Having complete faith in our ability to deliver has helped me push the boundaries and strive for the optimum outcome for our clients.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

I learned the hard way that being a successful leader is about being authentic, not about doing what you assume is expected of a leader. Focus on your individual strengths, not on what you think others want. Fortunately, I have worked with many seasoned leaders who have helped me realize that the more I show of myself, the more impact I have. Authenticity is an essential component of being able to connect with colleagues and develop the trust-based relationships demanded of a leader.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

Every organization needs diversity and inclusion to have the right talent in the right positions. It would be naïve to believe that you could successfully manage a diverse portfolio of clients with complex and varied needs, with only one type of person. Accenture, for instance, has a diverse workforce and the challenge for us is to help everyone find the right path and dare to make changes to make it work, nothing is stopping us from doing so.

Vodafone Client Account Lead, Kronberg, Germany

CLIENT ROLE

I am the client account lead for Vodafone in Germany, as well as a certified Business and Design Thinking Coach.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

I think it’s important to get out of your comfort zone, be curious and try something new. In my job, I have to be digitally fluent, be deeply versed in the solutions that work best in my industry, and ready to embrace whatever comes next in order to help our clients transform.
As well as staying relevant, I have also always tried to remain authentic. It’s important to know your skills and strengths and to use them. Don’t assume that others know what you can do or allow them to guess. Clearly communicate what you can – and want – to do and go for it!

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

I still face challenges around men who are not used to women in a technology environment and underestimate our ability to understand the details of complex solutions. Thankfully, this attitude is less prevalent than it used to be and within the next five years, I hope it will have disappeared altogether. In this situation, you just have to prove the doubters wrong and show them your knowledge of the industry and expertise in the solutions you’re developing.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

Inclusion & Diversity is key to survival in today’s world of business – and I am not just referring to women. The biggest challenge facing organizations is integrating their older generation of workers with millennials who have different values, regard for hierarchy and understanding of work/life balance. To succeed, companies will need to come to grips with the demographics of their employees and make the strengths of each profile work to their advantage.

Erina Yang
Global Client Account Lead for Lenovo, Greater China, Shanghai

CLIENT ROLE

I enjoy working with the senior executives at Lenovo to understand the business issues and opportunities they are facing, and connecting the right people from across Accenture who can come up with creative and robust solutions.

HOW I FOUND SUCCESS

Perpetual change is the only thing that will never change at Accenture. A readiness to learn has helped me to navigate this. With this attitude, I have enjoyed the opportunity to engage with senior client executives, to work in a dynamic environment with talent from around the globe and to win the trust of client leadership in guiding them on a journey of transformation.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

As a consulting lead, I love the ability to develop teams that have a strong combination of industry knowledge and very deep technical and functional skills. The result is always fantastic because it creates solutions that are greater than the sum of its parts, and are truly transformational, going beyond the client’s expectations.

As women, we have the privilege to play different roles. I try to be true to myself, to prioritize and to do my best. You should not spend your life wondering what might be, but instead take a chance, use your strengths, work out what’s important for you right now at this stage in your career, and try to make the best decision with no regrets. My motto is ‘you only live once’ so even if there are ups and downs along the way, at least you have experienced them first hand.

HOW I SEE THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN IN THE COMMUNICATIONS, MEDIA & TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRIES

New technology is breaking down industry boundaries and redefining business rules. Innovation is paramount and diversity creates a good foundation for innovation. Keep the openness to lead a team who dares to challenge traditional thinking and bring new thoughts into action. This is the spirit of inclusion and diversity.

Nerea Idirin Nerea Idirin
Global Client Account Lead for Telefonica Group, Brazil

CLIENT ROLE

I am responsible for overseeing all of the programs and projects we have underway with the Telefonica Group in Brazil, making sure we have the best people on hand to not only solve the tough issues facing telecommunications providers, but to find innovative ways to transform their business.

HOW I FOUND SUCCESS

I was working with our Telefonica client in Spain, my native country, when I was offered the opportunity to take on a role in Sao Paolo. This is one of the best moves I’ve ever made. Two years after I started work with our Telefonica Brazil account and with a great team around me, I was able to originate a game-changing deal that drove significant value for the client and resulted in the employment of more than a thousand people by Accenture. I am an expressive person and my ability to adapt to my environment helped me to rapidly engage with local clients and connect to the local team. Being sensitive to the different interests and objectives of those involved in the client’s transformation process – something that I think women tend to have an aptitude for – has also been instrumental in my success.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

It is all about connection. Connect to your colleagues, connect to your clients, and stay connected to the wider community. Believe you can make it and you will. You can make a difference by suggesting a new perspective and a different point of view. Take opportunities, small risks, experiment and then scale up.

In my experience, women tend to think we need more time, more experience and more skills to face a new challenge. But that is simply not true. I have found that women, myself included, can often bring a different perspective to the table, resulting in a new and innovative approach to problem-solving. The communications, media and technology industries need these different perspectives and diverse ways of working to evolve.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

‘Differences bring out the best’ is my slogan. At Telefonica Brazil, the gender split among Vice-Presidents was approximately 50:50. To be able to connect and work effectively with the client, Accenture also needs a diverse workforce. The millennial generation thinks it only natural to work with men, women, different races and different religions who bring diverse points of view, perspectives and opinions to the workplace.

The communications, media and technology industries will really need this diversity to succeed in the face of rapid change brought about by increasing digitalization. Women have a real opportunity to take the gender balance to the next level as machines, artificial intelligence and robots become more and more prevalent in the workplace.

CLIENT ROLE

As the Talent & Business Organization lead, I have the chance to serve some of the largest global telecommunications companies, and am passionate about coaching the next generation of women leaders.

HOW I DRIVE SUCCESS

I have been blessed by having people ahead of me who saw more potential in me than I saw myself. Through them I have been given roles that stretch me, take me outside my comfort zone and make me take risks far greater than I would have ever imagined. This has led me to be a strong believer in the mantra that “great things never come from comfort zones”. I always look to pay back and make sure I do my bit for the #liftasyourise philosophy. It’s important to be humble at the mountain tops – success rotates so don’t take it for granted.

HOW I CONNECT AT ACCENTURE

Women in our Communications, Media & Technology business have a fantastic opportunity to stand out and have their voices heard. We’re combining deep industry expertise with the best business solutions to help companies transform, and need more woman that are going to add their voice, share their opinions and help us change the game.

WHAT INCLUSION & DIVERSITY MEAN TO ME

I think every organization and every industry benefits from having a more diverse workforce. It brings different opinions, perspectives and ideas to the table. It brings more buzz and jazz to your discussions and your thought process. You get a real wealth of opinions that perhaps challenge the status quo. As a result, those opinions are better thought through and deliver richer results.
