Blazing new trails as a
woman engineer

Keeping frontline workers safe during the pandemic

“You aren’t going to graduate in Engineering,” words from a classmate in her freshman year at college only made Raquel Werner work harder. She drew inspiration from her grandmother’s sister, who was one of the first women in Venezuela to graduate from college with an engineering degree. Today, Raquel works at the Houston Innovation Hub as part of the Industry X team of engineers who use the power of data and digital to help clients redefine the products they make and how they make them—every step of the way.

As part of her role in Industry X, Raquel gets to do what she does best—meet new people and listen to their stories on her site visits. Spending time with plant engineers, machine operators, and even CIOs, she develops value cases and solution options for her clients’ digital journeys.

One of her proudest work moments to date was a solution to help keep frontline workers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Our team designed a reusable, low-cost, easy-to-manufacture PPE mask with a replaceable filter,” she says. “I was involved in 3D printing, CAD design, procurement of materials and communication with local hospitals that helped to test the equipment.” When young professionals seek her advice about a career in engineering, she tells them, “Find a place where you feel truly passionate and define your ‘why’.”
