He also leads the company's business interests in the local Chemical and Natural Resources industry and also heads the Accenture's global SAP Mining practice.
His responsibilities include the provision of excellent management and technology solutions that help transform Accenture's clients into high performing businesses.
Vasin joined Accenture in 1994. Prior to this he worked for a life insurer as a software engineer.
He has worked in the Natural Resources industry for three years and is currently managing Accenture's relationship with Impala Platinum, Xtrata Alloys (the world's second largest ferrochrome producer); and other companies that he has helped leverage solutions built on SAP technology.
Prior to joining the Natural Resources team, Vasin worked in the Utilities industry, teaming up with governments and companies across Southern Africa. These include NamPower, Namibia's national electricity distributor and CEB in Mauritius, where he led a successful SAP system implementation. In South Africa he has worked with City Power, the City of Johannesburg's electricity provider, implementing another SAP solution. He has also worked with the City of Cape Town.
Vasin says it is a given that one needs to know both clients' businesses and the industry very well in order to achieve your goals. According to Vasin, SAP has proved to be the lowest risk solution in the South African Mining industry, and the strongest human resource, payroll and health and safety functionality in its class.
According to Vasin, the Natural Resources industry is currently booming, given high gold, platinum and base metals prices. He says the industry is primarily driven by the exchange rate and commodity prices. According to Vasin, a strong rand is not good news for local Mining players because it impacts on business performance. He also maintains that the instability of the rand affects productivity and forces companies to lower their operating costs while improving efficiency.
Moving forward Vasin foresees significant industry consolidation with the smaller players being bought by larger companies. In terms of future trends he says that Mining companies should start realising the opportunity for shared services, which has long been overlooked.
Vasin was born in Durban in 1968. He completed his matric at Earlington High School in 1995. After matric Vasin studied a BSc. degree majoring in Computer Science and Maths at the University of Durban-Westville. He completed the degree in 1988 He says he choose a career in management and technology consulting largely because of the growth in demand for skills in the industry.
Vasin attributes his success to hard work and to the fact that he leads by example. His hobbies are photography, wildlife and birding. He also likes soccer and is a proud supporter of Mamelodi Sundowns. The team has a special place in his heart and says he wouldn't mind having the coach around for breakfast, to give him few tips. Vasin relaxes by listening to his collection of Jonathan Butler's music CDs.
Apart from his managing director role in the Resources operating group Vasin has a seat on Accenture's board of directors, responsible for corporate citizenship projects, which includes the Accenture Education Trust, among other social responsibility activities.
Teachers and police officers would be overjoyed to hear that Vasin plans to revise their salaries to ensure that they are rewarded more appropriately-- if he could be the president of the country for a day.
