On the verge of finishing his bachelor of commerce degree at Wits, Gavin Parsons decided that life as a chartered accountant wasn’t what he was looking for. He changed direction to enter the world of information technology, completing a second bachelor of commerce in information systems as well as an honours in information systems and strategic management. He opted for the consultant’s life, attracted by a dynamic environment that would offer him exposure to different industries, clients and challenges. Since joining Accenture in 1999 as a graduate, he has never stopped learning and remains stimulated by the challenges his career offers.
He is currently the programme manager for projects at two major public sector clients. Both clients are involved in exciting projects, the one using innovative technologies like biometrics to improve security, and the other with a massive modernisation of its systems. “Working in the public sector can be very satisfying because you can see tangible results that really make a difference to the country,” he remarks.
Parsons believes that government clients face a challenge when it comes to making decisions. “The money is there, and so are the people—but delays are caused by reluctance to take decisions to turn the great ideas into reality,” he says. “Accenture can help because we have an excellent global track record within the public service space. That means the decision-maker can see that a proposed solution and implementation plan is viable and will deliver value…and that we have the capability to make it happen."
A keen sportsman, Parsons enjoys tennis, 20-20 cricket, indoor soccer and golf. He’s an avid reader, with Terry Pratchett, Ayn Rand and Bill Bryson particular favourites. His new iPad, and the myriad innovative applications that come with it, is taking up a lot of his time at present. Travel and eating out are also interests.
