With the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, the US Congress provided funding for the adoption of electronic health records and the creation of health information exchanges.
The estimated net federal spending through these incentives will be in the range of $14.1 billion to $27.3 billion.
In this paper, Accenture examines the proactive steps states should take now to design and build HIEs that will be self-sustainable in the future after initial federal funds dry up. States can better maximize the return on ARRA funding for HIEs by building a more sustainable model that provides the expected benefits to the state and its citizens and addresses the needs of critical HIE participants.
