Special Report: The Art and Practice of Mastery

Statue

Whether in business or in the fine arts, exceptional performers distinguish themselves through their mastery of fundamentals. In contrast to average performers, masters operate at a discernibly higher level, displaying a command of key skills and knowledge that enables them to innovate, surprise and delight.

In business, mastery gives organizations a combination of reliability and versatility, allowing them to adjust to change quickly, seize on unexpected opportunities and catch competitors off guard. That’s why Accenture believes that mastery is one of the three elemental and interrelated building blocks of a high-performance business—along with a deep understanding of current and future value levers and a high-performance anatomy.

Mastery has been a key focus of Accenture's ongoing high-performance business research program. To date, the program has looked at five areas of functional mastery—information technology, human and organizational development, marketing, finance and performance management, and supply chain management. The following three-part special report showcases Accenture’s latest research in this field and explores mastery from three perspectives:

  • "State of the Art" explores the concept itself and provides a framework for understanding how high performers differentiate themselves through mastery.

  • "A Seat at the Table" takes a more detailed look at the components that constitute mastery of finance and performance management.

  • "Disturbing the System" discusses change management and how mastering this important aspect of human and organizational performance can contribute to high performance.
