Outlook Journal, October 2003
As businesses emerge from the recent global economic downturn, the market will reward companies that deliver both short-term results and long-term growth. What can leaders do to manage successfully for today and tomorrow?
A superior ability to resolve this paradox is among the critical skills we have identified in our ongoing effort to understand exactly what drives a business to perform at the highest levels. Against a backdrop of unprecedented management challenges and complexity, we have recently redoubled our efforts with a major new research program. It will look at high performance both in the context of individual industries or industry segments and the mastery of individual business functions. Our emerging perspective on high-performance business will be enhanced by our daily work with clients around the world. Those clients will be the ultimate beneficiaries as we use the results of our research to develop practical, comprehensive frameworks for achieving high performance.
The cover story of this issue of Outlook describes the scope of our program in more detail, as well as Accenture’s distinctive point of view on high-performance business. It also shares some of the exciting initial findings of the research.
I am personally energized by this focus on high performance and the journey that will unfold with our research over the next several months. This work will influence how we help clients enhance their business performance. As an example of our commitment, we have brought together our management leaders from the Accenture Institute for Strategic Change and our Policy & Corporate Affairs group to create a new entity.
I hope you find this Outlook relevant as you reflect on your own business strategy. Think about how you can help your organization accept uncertainty in business as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Consider ways to reignite growth in your core business. Last, focus on flexible, high-performance strategies that will deliver the results you want today, as well as the value you will need tomorrow.
