Can cutting costs and energy consumption translate into a way to out-compete? Ashish Chowdhary, Head of Services, Nokia Siemens Networks says most certainly. “Services are known more as an operational requirement and, we at Nokia Siemens have been able to transition and set the path toward converting them into a strategic advantage instead.”

Chowdhary spoke about his organization’s vision for the communications industry, elaborating that mobile broadband is expected to grow nearly 40 times between 2008 and 2015. By 2015, broadband (both mobile and fixed) will touch all aspects of life. By 2015, telecommunications systems will likely connect nearly five billion people, many from China and India. This will present a huge opportunity for innovation, as most of these people will be from the lower income groups. Meeting the price points necessary to succeed in these markets will therefore demand the utmost cost efficiency.
According to Chowdhary, the tough economic and competitive pressures are drivers for communications service providers to seek efficiencies in network performance in order to drive business growth. This has led to an increase in the outsourcing of network management and operations to optimize costs, as well as a way to build revenues through improved service quality, coverage and usage.
The outsourcing of network operations is resulting in innovative delivery models and methods such as offshore hosting and management of customer networks using remote delivery and automated tools and processes. Nokia Siemens Networks has pioneered a unique and centralized global delivery model in this area through three Global Networks Solutions Centers (GNSC). “Through the GNSCs operational concept, we can consolidate multiple elements of our global end-to-end services strengths and move toward industrializing services delivery,” said Chowdhary.
In addition, managing energy-related operational expenditures is another opportunity to innovate. Energy is a significant percentage of a communications service provider’s operating cost – accounting for up to 10percent in mature markets. In developing markets, energy costs can range from 15 to 30 percent. Reducing energy consumption and better managing power demands for specific sites, such as mobile base stations, allows for environmentally friendly ways to profitably expand rural and remote networks, explained Chowdhary.

As head of services, Ashish Chowdhary is responsible for the global services business of Nokia Siemens Networks. He also currently sits on the Global Executive Board for Nokia Siemens Networks.
Prior to his current role, Mr. Chowdhary was global head of managed services from 2007 until 2009 and had overall responsibility for the company’s network planning & optimization, outsourcing and global network operations business around the world. Mr. Chowdhary joined Nokia in December 2003 as head of the networks business in India and continued in this role for Nokia Siemens Networks when the joint venture was formed in April 2007. Before joining Nokia, he worked for Hughes Communications Ltd., India and Hughes Network Systems in the United States.
