A large US-based telecom service provider wanted to reduce application development and maintenance costs and enhance application performance by streamlining its quality assurance and testing processes. Accenture set up a Testing Center of Excellence (TCoE)—leveraging its global delivery capability—to help the client drastically reduce production defect count by approximately 97 percent, transition from a waterfall to an Agile development model and improve quality by implementing test automation frameworks, leveraging Accenture Intelligent Tools.
As a company focused on providing exceptional service to its customers, the client needed to implement an effective testing and quality assurance program for more than 60 applications that supported a wide range of functions, including monitoring and control, sales, provisioning, trouble ticketing, billing and customer service. The company wanted to:
Reduce application development and maintenance costs
Improve overall software quality through standardized QA processes and automated testing efforts.
Increase user satisfaction through better application performance as a result of lower production defect count.
Accenture established a global TCoE—leveraging its delivery center in Hyderabad, India—to help the client align its QA processes with its existing Waterfall delivery model—a linear and sequential approach to software delivery. Subsequently, Accenture helped enable the client to smoothly transition to an agile delivery model—an iterative and incremental development approach—allowing the client to mitigate risks and rapidly realize value. The Accenture team supported the client with end-to-end testing capabilities in the Agile delivery model, including:
Accenture implemented multiple test and process automation frameworks, leveraging a combination of in-house, custom-built and third-party tools and assets, including:
HP QuickTest Pro (QTP), Selenium and LoadRunner for automation and performance testing
Hexawise and Script Generation Tool for automated test design
QTP and Java test automation frameworks for reduction of execution and maintenance efforts
Accenture leveraged its software testing process and technology experience combined with telecom industry recommended practices across various delivery models to help the client streamline its QA processes and increase test coverage.
From November 2005 to February 2012, Accenture was able to show a production defect reduction of approximately 97 percent across supported applications. This resulted in reduced ongoing application maintenance effort and cost. By adopting an agile development model, the transition being supported by Accenture, the client was able to shorten its time-to-market cycle, increasing the number of releases from 44 to 12 per year. It was also able to increase test coverage and shorten the release cycle by automating nearly 50 percent of the active regression suite and reusing 20 percent of these across releases.
Moreover, the client was able to implement process automation across test scripting, execution and reporting. During this nine-year time span the client was able to save an estimated 27,000 hours of effort through test automation implemented with Accenture support across multiple tools. It also leveraged the TCoE to establish standardized QA and release management processes, including separate testing and development environments and standardized code drop procedures.
