The client is a leading mobile handset vendor in Asia Pacific. The company wanted to accelerate the porting of new Android releases onto target chipsets ahead of the schedule provided by the chipset vendor to gain a competitive edge.

Business Challenge

Accenture was asked to do a feasibility study of developing Board Support Packages (BSPs) from the Android Donut and Eclair releases for a new Qualcomm smartphone chipset platform. Working in parallel with chipset vendors so time to market would be significantly reduced, a high-quality BSP for handset platforms had to be delivered.

The final step was to migrate the newly released Android Froyo code into the BSP, creating a high-quality BSP running on the client’s new smartphone platform.

How We Helped

Accenture was responsible for technical architecture, consulting, Linux-based device driver development, vendor hardware adaptation layer, audio/video codecs, graphics and camera.

In addition, Accenture:

Proposed an end-to-end approach beginning with an analysis and a knowledge transition (KT) phase.
Provided KT to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) engineers followed by a joint KT phase with the chipset vendor on the reference architecture and source code study.
Identified the changes required in the drivers and components and implemented changes for the new Qualcomm chipset-based smartphone platforms.
Distributed teams with complementary skilled resources in multimedia (audio/video/camera) and base port (BSP, boot and device drivers) and Android framework.
