Large Chinese Hospital: Web Portal and Mobility

The client is a comprehensive teaching hospital in China. Hospital management wanted to change to pre-examination and triage processes that used digital records and mobile technologies.

The goal was to help improve the triage process and enhance communication between departments and locations. Accenture developed applications and programs for pre-examination and triage processes, resulting in improved triage efficiency and emergency department utilization.

The emergency department treats more than 64,000 patients each year in two facilities in separate buildings. Each facility managed different types of patients, and the workload across both emergency departments was unbalanced. Nurses and doctors used paper-based records that slowed teamwork and lessened the number of patients treated. Hospital management wanted to change to pre-examination and triage processes that used digital records and mobile technologies. The goal was to help improve the triage process and enhance communication between departments and locations.

Accenture teamed with hospital management in “Project MediComm” to help identify and solve issues in the emergency department. We developed applications and programs for pre-examination and triage processes:

• An Android application allowing the user to create, update, assign and accept tasks from a tablet or smartphone

• A Web portal with the same functionality that facilitates data entry via a personal computer station

• A backend with supporting databases and manager functions (for example, report creation)

• Improved patient data management and storage
• Improved triage efficiency and emergency department utilization
• Increased medical staff communications between departments and locations
