Knowledge Discovery Tool
How does an Accenture Technology Labs' prototype turbo-charge pharmaceuticals research and enable virtual collaboration?
Researchers at Accenture Technology Labs developed the Knowledge Discovery Tool, a knowledge integration application that probes the most current, pertinent data repositories and displays knowledge as if stored in a single, holistic database. The Knowledge Discovery Tool goes beyond basic search engines by enabling users to find relevant materials and links that they never knew existed. Then it identifies and introduces parties with similar research interests and connects them in a chat room where they can share findings. A special semantic model provides cross-referencing capability, ensuring that each search is specific to an appropriate business context for the user.
Several industries can benefit from the Knowledge Discovery Tool. For example, Accenture researchers are helping a global pharmaceutical company use this concept to accelerate its drug research and development process. With an industry-specific version of the Knowledge Discovery Tool, pharmaceutical researchers can integrate all available information from drug concept through commercialization as they begin to explore a new field of interest.
Accenture researchers also built a special version of the application, called the Knowledge Navigator, for the World Economic Forum. Available on the Forum Web site, the Knowledge Navigator allows the general public to access session presentations, summit programs, panelist biographies and more. Members are able to use a more comprehensive knowledge base on the Web site's private area.
Accenture Technology Labs, the technology research and development (R&D) organization within Accenture, is charged with researching, inventing and commercializing the next wave of cutting-edge business solutions using new and emerging technologies.
