Accenture Mobility Business Integration Services helped Canadian National Railway Company install a state-of-the art platform to take its track maintenance effectiveness and efficiency to the next level. As one of the largest uses of mobile technology by a railway, CN now knows in real time where corrective action is needed and what crews are available for making repairs.
Canadian National Railway Co., Canada's largest railroad, operates more than 20,000 miles of track and generated revenues of approximately US$ 7.3 billion in 2009 . The company aggressively pursued several mergers and acquisitions to expand its North American franchise.
Canadian National Railway decided to take its track maintenance effectiveness and efficiency to the next level through an initiative called “The CN Precision Engineering Program”. The effort would rely on a state-of-the-art SAP platform to help the railway develop better information for decision-making and oversight, while improving CN’s safety, regulatory and environmental compliance.
Accenture helped integrate the railway's engineering and maintenance processes on the SAP NetWeaver platform. The Canadian National Railway/Accenture project team developed a custom Java application designed to interact with SAP Mobile Asset Management.
Accenture introduced a process-based user interface hosted on a ruggedized laptop in phases (wireless mobile workstations with access to Canadian National's systems) rolling out the pioneering solution first to track inspectors and subsequently to track foremen who oversee rail maintenance and report on progress.
The Canadian National Precision Engineering project not only represents one of the largest uses of mobile technology by a railway, but it provides a pioneering system of track inspection and gathering information for track inspection compliance, labor and material reporting and productivity that can be adapted by other heavily regulated industries with compliance reporting needs.
The leading edge solution is delivering productivity improvements through better workload planning, real time capture of information at the source (foreman), and increased visibility into recoverable assets.
Better oversight means Canadian National is working more effectively and efficiently than ever. Now the railway knows in real time where corrective action is needed and what crews are available for making repairs.
