According to the World Steel Association, the production of one ton of steel consumes about 21 gigajoules of energy and generates up to two tons of carbon dioxide, while the potential environmental impacts of mining include erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water by chemicals from mining processes.
Add in the metals and mining industries’ indirect impacts from transportation and other supply chain processes, and it becomes increasingly clear that sustainability is a key issue that any organization in these sectors needs to have high on its corporate agenda.
To help organizations capitalize on the opportunities this ebook drills down into what it means to run a sustainable organization—but specifically through the lens of each major executive role. It starts at the top, considering the issues for a chief executive officer trying to set the agenda on sustainability. It then maps out how sustainability impacts each other major role—from the chief strategy officer through to the chief financial officer—and what they need to bring to the table in return.
Each chapter highlights what leading executives are now doing to incorporate sustainability into how they think, manage and lead whilst setting out pragmatic approaches to capitalizing on the opportunities presented by sustainability.
The findings and lessons within this e-book are drawn from the highlights from “The Sustainable Organization: Lessons From Leaders Series”, an 18-month long research program. The core inputs include:
First and foremost, well over 60 in-depth interviews with leading C-suite executives and experts, spanning a range of industries and geographies globally;
Accenture’s sustainability-related research, journal articles, events, and educational materials. Much of this has been developed in collaboration with our network of partners;
Direct input from Accenture’s own executive leadership;
Finally, input and examples from across our Strategy and Sustainability consulting group, based on our wide-ranging work with clients globally.
