The oil and gas industry has a long history operating in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia—where the energy access challenge is most pronounced.
Needs-based philanthropy to maintain social licenses to operate is no longer sufficient, and oil and gas companies will need to rethink their relationships with host communities.
